LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Three conference women's teams combined to go 7-1 last week in the second full week of 2019 spring tennis action.

No. 34 Southwestern opened the spring portion of its season in Abilene, Texas, with three straight 9-0 wins - sweeping through George Fox on Friday and McMurry and Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.

Against George Fox, the Pirates ended all six matches in two sets with Mary Cardone defeating Jillian Studer 6-2 and 6-0 and Esther Bowers taking both sets over Laney Search by the same 6-0 tally. The following day, Cecile Wilde and Esther Bowers took a hard-fought doubles match 9-7, at the No. 1 line, while Mary Cardone and Mariana Quetzeri and Nina Elez and Sara Le each won their sets, 8-1. In singles competition, the Pirates took four of the six matches in straight sets with Bowers defeating Clair Huffine in three sets. In Saturday's final match against Hardin-Simmons, the Pirates cruised to the 9-0 sweep without losing a single set.

Schreiner moved to 4-0 on the year with road victories against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia on Saturday.

The Mountaineers won 8-1 against the Crusaders before defeating the Tornados, 6-3. Schreiner won all three doubles points and five of six singles points against UMHB. The Mountaineers were led by Jennifer Garcia and Kate De Los Santos who combined to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, and then each took their respective singles matches in straigh sets. Garcia won 6-1, 6-3 on the No. 1 line and De Los Santos earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3. After taking two of three points in doubles action, Garcia (No. 1), Kate Woods (No. 3), Marlee Daniels (No. 5) and Lindsey Reynolds (No. 6) each took points in singles play to clinch the victory.

After dropping its match to Division II St. Edward's, 6-1, on Thursday, No. 21 Trinity rebounded with two victories in California, defeating No. 27 Whitman, 5-4, on Saturday and the University of California-Santa Cruz, 9-0, on Sunday.

The matchup with Whitman was a battle from the very beginning. Trinity fell behind 3-1, losing two of three doubles points and after Andrea De Leon came up short in a three-setter at No. 5 singles. But the Tigers' fortunes turned when Caroline Kutach took the top line in straight sets, and Ashley DeBauge evened the score at 3-3 by taking a three-setter at No. 2. Mary Kaffen won the sixth match, but Hailey Feuer lost her first singles pairing of the season at line three. The clincher came from the last match on the court, as Zoe Kaffen won at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 6-4. The following day was much less dramatic as all of Trinity's wins against UC-Santa Cruz occurred in straight sets. The Tigers now stand at 2-2 on the season and are 2-0 against Division III opponents.
