CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Southwestern University's Mary Cardone and Trinity University's Caroline Kutach both fell in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship Thursday.
Making her second appearance in the NCAA Division III Singles Championship in as many years, Cardone faced one of the toughest draws of the tournament as she opened against #3 Elysa Kohrs of MIT.
Kohrs took the first game in the opening set but Cardone quickly responded and went up 4-2. Kohrs rattled off four straight game wins to win the first set 6-4 and was able to fend off Cardone the rest of the way. Ultimately, Cardone exited the championship with a 6-2 set two loss.
In her first appearance at the NCAA Singles event, Kutach dropped her first set 6-3 to seventh-seeded Tess Trinka of Bowdoin, and then suffered the same fate in the second set.
