KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Trinity University duo of junior Liza Southwick and sophomore Marie Lutz lost a three-setter in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Doubles Championships at Kalamazoo College on Thursday.
The Tiger All-America tandem was eliminated from the 16-draw event by fourth seeds Tiffany Cheng and Joulia Likhanskaia of Bowdoin (ME) College. Southwick and Lutz won the hard-fought first set 7-6 (2), and then lost the second and third 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
Trinity’s duo qualified for the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. During the dual-match season, Southwick and Lutz amassed an 8-5 record at #1 doubles. Last fall, the talented pair won the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Doubles crown for the second straight time. They advanced to the National Small College Championships, and finished in sixth place. Their first regional championship occurred in 2014, which later resulted in a fifth-place performance at the ITA national championships.
