SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head
coaches in the league, Mackenzie Knoop of Trinity University has
been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)
Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Year. In that same balloting,
Millsaps’ Jason Box was voted Women’s Coach-of-the-Year
for the first time in his career.
Knoop, a first-year player from Albuquerque, N.M., posted a 15-6
singles record and is currently ranked third in the West region in
singles play. The first TU Tiger to earn this honor since Lizzie
Yasser in 2002, Knoop has posted a 14-8 doubles record this season
with teammate and all-SCAC performer Thavindra Ekanayake and the
duo is currently ranked fifth in West region doubles play. Knoop
won the ITA Singles and Doubles at the Regional Championships last
fall, finishing sixth individually at ITA Nationals. Knoop, who has
won four straight singles matches, helped lead Trinity to its first
SCAC championship since 2006, a 6-3 win over Sewanee, on April
29.
For the first time in school history, Millsaps’ Box has been recognized by his peers as the SCAC Women’s Tennis Coach-of-the-Year. Box guided a Majors program that earned its highest ranking ever at the SCAC Tournament knocking Southwestern off 6-3 to earn 3rd place in the league improving to 18-5 overall for the season. The Majors team has made history with an 18-5 record and finishing third overall in the SCAC. They made the tremendous turnaround after finishing in last a season ago and only going 1-17. Box represents the first ever head coach to be recognized as SCAC Coach-of-the-Year at Millsaps on either the Men’s or Women’s side.
