TYLER, Texas - Hendrix College first year
Claire Mesnil won the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association's Division III Southwest Women's Regional Tournament on
Sunday at the Summers Tennis Center. Mesnil teamed up with first
year Kwynn Biggs to finish second in the doubles
competition.
Mesnil (Avignon, France) won the 58-player singles bracket after
being seeded at No. 4. Mesnil beat top-seeded sophomore Katy
Poettcker of SCAC foe Trinity University, 6-2, 6-0 in the
semifnals.
Mesnil's opponent in the finals would be the No. 3 seed, Katie
Griffith of Trinity. She cruised to her fifth victory in three
days, 6-1, 6-2, to claim the singles championship.
In the doubles finals, University of Texas at Tyler's senior Beth
Launius and sophomore Michelle Hagler faced off against Mesnil and
Biggs (Lake Charles, La.).
The UT Tyler duo swept the first set, 6-0, but would run into some
trouble in the second set.
Launius and Hagler jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Mesnil and
Biggs would win the next three games to tie the match.
The Patriots and the Warriors would trade games back and forth
until Launius and Hagler finally put the Hendrix duo away, 7-5.
This was the first ITA Regional win of any kind for the Warriors.
Mesnil automatically earns All-American honors from the ITA at the
conclusion of the spring season.
Mesnil will now advance to ITA Small College Nationals on Oct. 15
at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile Ala. The singles and
doubles winners from the Southwest region must face their
counterparts from the Pacific Northwest region in a play-in match.
Mesnil will take on Elise Otto of Whitman College.
