LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's swimming teams were in action last week, including Southwestern and Trinity competing at the TU Tiger Invitational - which was contested on Saturday at the Josh Davis Natatorium, the site of the 2020 conference championship meet.
The Trinity women scored 759 points to win the three-day event, defeating five other teams at the meet. Tiger divers took the top three slots on the 1-meter board, which included NCAA III qualifying performances from Gabi Fulk (265.70) and Maren Merwath (262.60). Merwarth and Fulk also had qualifying scores in Friday's 3-meter competition. The two will need one more qualifying mark to be eligible to compete at the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships February 28-29, 2020, at Trinity's Hixon Natatorium.
The quartet of Mabel Fowler, Star Rosales, Elizabeth Nelson, and Morgen Reyna won the women's 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:29.20, for an NCAA "B" Cut time. The Tiger team outdistanced Southwestern by five seconds. Fowler was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA Division III "B" Cut time of 2:01.76. Fowler's time was a half-second off her school record. She broke her school record in Friday's 500-yard freestyle with a "B" Cut performance. Caroline Westholder placed second in the 200-yard butterfly, just 0.14 seconds behind the Oklahoma Christian swimmer. Anabelle Conde was a second-place finisher in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
For Southwestern, which placed fifth overall with a score of 456, Emma Frey placed second overall in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.84 alongside Jesse Stovall also did well in the 100 free by earning sixth place with a time of 53.31. In the women's 200-yard backstroke Alicia Peters placed fourth with a time of 2:09.99 and in the 200-yard butterfly Summer Newton placed fourth with a time of 2:17.68. In the women's 200-yard breaststroke two women swimmers stood out, Rehgan Hartsell (2:27.78) came in third place and Natalie Gierat (2:30.08) came in sixth place.
In the women 400-yard freestyle relay the Southwestern women's team showed their speed coming second to Trinty with a time of 3:34.36 with a group including Frey, Stovall, Hartsell and Brielle Adolph.
On Friday, University of the Ozarks had its most dominating performance of the season with a 157-53 win over Williams Baptist University. Two swimmers took gold medal honors and broke program records during the dual - Rosie Wade (1650, 18:49.78; 50 back, 30.06; 200 back, 2:18.37) and Emily Spillers (200 fly, 2:32.04). The combination of Wade, Skylar Frazier, Spillers and Catherine Wellborn won the 200 medley relay with a time 2:04.38. Other winners for the Eagles included: Veronique Dunivier in the 50 breast (39.00), Wellborn in the 100 free (59.66) and 50 fly (30.28), Frazier in the 200 breast (2:53.25), Spillers in the 500 free (5:54.16).
The foursome of Wellborn, Coffin, Spillers and Wade won the 200 free relay swimming a 1:53.11.
The Colorado College women posted 18 top-10 results en route to an impressive fourth-place finish among 10 teams at the Phoenix Fall Classic in Chicago, Ill. Senior Jio Chang and sophomore Ana Mashek each posted a pair of top-10 finishes. Chang finished sixth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 butterfly, while Mashek was ninth and 10th in the 100 and 200 backstroke races, respectively. Other individual top-10 placements in the pool came from senior Selma Jukic (sixth in the 400 IM), freshman Kate Brush (sixth in the 200 butterfly) and freshman Millie Benkert (eighth in the 100 backstroke).
In diving, freshman Peyton Classon finished fifth in each event and collected an NCAA Division III "B" qualifying score of 400.6 points on the 1-meter board.
The SCAC Swimming and Diving season picks back up weekend after next as Austin College, Centenary and McMurry compete at the Hendrix College Invitational Dec. 6-7 in Conway, Arkansas.
