MARY CARDONE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas has been selected the SCAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played the week of Monday, September 17th to Sunday, September 23rd.
Cardone led the Pirates to a pair of SCAC shutout victories last week against Centenary and Schreiner. In two games combined Cardone collected nine saves, including a five-save performance in the 1-0 win over the Mountaineers.
Cardone and the Pirates are currently riding a four-game shutout winning streak, the longest by the program since 2012. Over the stretch, Cardone has been credited with 15 saves and is currently second in the SCAC with 38 saves on the year.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior defender Aubrie Wells of Texas Lutheran led a TLU defensive effort that shutout SCAC opponent Centenary to help the Bulldogs earn their first league win of the season. Wells was key in limiting Centenary to six total shots on Sunday. Sophomore defender Lindsey Peng of Trinity led the Tigers to their 100th consecutive regular season SCAC victory with a 9-0 shutout win over Johnson & Wales last Sunday. Peng picked up a pair of assists, as well as leading a Trinity defense that yielded just three total shots and one shot on goal.
