LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Headed by tournament MVPs Meredith Licata and Kristen Canepa of Trinity University, the conference office today announced the 2017 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women's Soccer All-Tournament team.
Trinity won its ninth straight SCAC Women's Soccer Championship after defeating Texas Lutheran in a thrilling 1-0 final. For the Tigers, the win represented the program's 22nd SCAC title – tying with Trinity men's tennis for the most team titles for a single program in league history.
Despite Trinity ultimately holding a 22-1 lead in shots and 11-0 with shots on frame, the championship match remained scoreless into the 73rd minute when Licata cleaned up a rebound from a shot by Tierney Thompson and deposited it in the back of the net to provide what proved to be the game-winner for the Tigers. It was the senior's second goal of the championships and earned her tournament Offensive MVP honors.
Sophomore defender Kristen Canepa, who earned tournament Defensive MVP honors, led a defensive effort that allowed opponents just four total shots and two on goal in the Tigers' two victories. Sunday's defensive suffocation continued a historic tournament run for the Trinity program. In the 18 tournament games in which Trinity has participated, the Tigers have allowed just two goals and posted shutouts in 16 of those contests.
Trinity had a record-tying nine players earn all-Tournament recognition, followed by Texas Lutheran with three selections. Austin College, Centenary and Southwestern each had one honoree.
