
SUWANEE, Ga. - The Trinity University women's soccer team extended it's winning streak to 12 straight games dating back to last year. The TU Tigers are now a perfect 11-0 on the season and look to extend their streak as they will host Southwestern on Saturday afternoon.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College went 1-0-1 over the weekend with a
dominant 4-0 win over Oglethorpe on Friday before battling Sewanee
to a 1-1 draw after a pair of overtimes on Sunday. On Saturday
Gabby Mavelian got things started offensively when she scored on a
feed from Annie Gunter just 4:06 into the game, and by the 19th
minute Gunter would add two goals of her own with assists coming
from Mackenzie Lund and Mavelian on the first score and Emma Treu
and Shelley Casey on the second as the 'Roos went into the half
leading 3-0. In the second half the 'Roos again scored quickly when
keeper Kaitlin Elledge boomed a punt over the heads of the
Oglethorpe defense and Treu was able to collect and score, giving
Elledge her first career assist and making it a 4-0 final. On
Sunday, the 'Roos found themselves trailing 1-0 after a penalty
kick in the second half but Treu collected her own rebound to knot
things up at 1-1, which is how the match would end.
Birmingham-Southern traveled to Hawaii this
weekend during BSC’s Fall Break for two games against
Division II opponents in BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific. The
Panthers split the trip, falling 2-0 to BYUH on Friday before
topping HPU on Saturday 2-1. The Panthers are now 8-6 on the
season. Sophomore Alicia Plotky scored the game-winner on Saturday
with 35 seconds remaining in the match. The Panthers will return
home this week and rest before heading over to Jackson on Friday to
take on Millsaps.
Centre split on the road this weekend in their
matches played in Texas. Friday night in San Antonio, the Colonels
took an early lead on the scoreboard when a scramble in the box
after a corner kick lead to a Tiger "own goal". At the 32'54" mark,
junior Brittany Garr struck a corner kick into a sea of Tigers and
Colonels that was wrangled in by senior Katherine MacMurray.
MacMurray would take the shot which was miscleared by the Tigers
into their own net. Twelves minutes into the second half, the
Tigers found find the equalizer when an unmarked player received a
crossed ball and tucked it into Centre's net. The game winner would
come only mintues later when Trinity scored an unassisted 1v1 goal
against Centre's goalkeeper. For the match, the Tigers outshot the
Colonels 16-6 and lead in corner attempts 3-2. Sunday afternoon in
Georgtown, Texas, Centre defeated the Southwestern Pirates 2-1. In
the 37th minute of play, freshman Holly Shiels earned her first
collegiate goal off of a cross from freshman teammate, MT Kersey.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Colonels gave up a corner
kick that would result in the equalizing goal for the Pirates. A
little over a minute later, the Pirates would give up a corner kick
that was collected by Centre's Sarah Hall and shot on frame. When
the Pirate's goalkeeper was unable to hold Hall's shot, freshman
Amy Hebbeler knocked-in the game winner which lifted the Colonels
to a 2-1 win. On the outing, the Pirates outshot the Colonels 10-7.
Centre would lead in corner attempts at 4-3. Centre returns to
action at home on Wednesday, October 21st as the Colonels face the
College of Mount Saint Joseph. They then head to Maryville Tennesse
on Saturday, October 24th to take-on Maryville College.
DePauw is 5-6-4 overall and 3-2-2 in SCAC play
after winning at Southwestern on Friday by a 1-0 count and dropping
a 2-1 decision at fifth-ranked Trinity on Sunday. Against,
Southwestern, Julia Drummond scored the game's lone goal at 52:33
to give the Tigers the win. The Tigers held a 12-9 advantage in
shots, while Southwestern led in corners, 4-1. Caroline Kerr
recorded the shutout after recording six saves. Trinity took a 1-0
in the opening nine minutes of Sunday's game before Alex Ehr
knotted the contest at 1-1 with a goal at 53:40. Trinity's Abigail
Loar provided the game-winning goal at 56:50. Trinity held a 25-4
edge in shots and a 10-0 margin in corners. Lauren Palfrey totaled
three saves and Caroline Kerr had seven as the two split time in
goal.
Hendrix College
enjoyed its bye week and spent the past weekend resting up for the
upcoming SCAC weekend against Sewanee-The University of the South
on Friday night and Oglethorpe University on Sunday. The Warriors
currently stand at 7-4 overall and 2-2 in league play, good for
sixth place in the SCAC.
Millsaps had the week off from competition, but
will return to the field tomorrow when they play host to
Mississippi College at 7 p.m. They will then close out the week and
a four-match homestand at Harper Davis Field with an 8 p.m. kickoff
against Birmingham-Southern on Friday.
Oglethorpe split a pair of weekend contests
against Austin College and the University of Dallas. On Friday, the
‘Roos took care of the Petrels with a fast start, scoring
three first half goals on their way to a 4-0 shutout win. On Sunday
against Dallas, the two teams played to a scoreless tie through 90
minutes before freshman Courtney Phillips scored in the first
overtime to lift Oglethorpe to the win. It was Phillips second
game-winning goal on the season and she has also assisted on two
other game-winners. The Petrels are now 5-6 on the season and will
travel to Memphis to face Rhodes College this Friday
Rhodes was idle this past week. The Lynx will
return to the pitch Friday afternoon as Rhodes will host SCAC foe
Oglethorpe University.
Sewanee went 1-0-1 on the week with a 4-1 win at
Dallas Friday and a 1-1 double overtime tie with SCAC foe Austin
College. Lizzie Butler (Carrabelle, Fla.) led Sewanee's attach on
the weekend with two Tiger goals. Britt Williams (Birmingham, Ala.)
was the goalie of record for the Tigers and had eight saves.
Sewanee is now 7-1-3 and unbeaten at 2-0-2 in the SCAC. The Tigers
will play at Hendrix and Rhodes next weekend. Austin is 7-4-2.
Southwestern went 0-3 over their home stand week
to fall to 7-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference. Tuesday,
Southwestern faced off with ASC opponent #24 Hardin-Simmons
University. SU was able to hold the Cowgirls scoreless through the
first period, but eventually fell 3-0. First-year keeper Sarah
Nonaka recorded 13 saves on the afternoon to keep the Pirates
within striking distance throughout most of the match. DePauw
University needed just one goal to defeat the Pirates on Friday
afternoon. The Tigers chipped a shot from 25 yards out that snuck
past senior keeper Cheryl Duncan up DePauw up 1-0. The Pirates had
numerous good looks at goal throughout the match, but were unable
to capitalize and tie the game. Sunday, SU fell behind in the first
half, taking a 1-0 deficit into halftime but were able to bring the
game back even on a perfectly placed corner kick that found a
charging Danielle Madison who headed it into the back of the net.
Centre needed just over a minute to score their second, and game
winning, goal on a deflected save to go up 2-1. Southwestern will
head to conference rival Trinity on Saturday and will look to snap
their four game losing streak with an upset victory in San
Antonio.
No. 6 Trinity swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference weekend at home to remain unbeaten this season. Trinity
won 2-1 over Centre and DePauw, the two teams atop the SCAC
standings coming into the weekend. The Tigers rallied from a 1-0
halftime deficit against Centre, pushing across two goals less than
15 minutes into the second period to take the win. Against DePauw,
Trinity held the halftime lead, but the visitors scored early in
the second to tie the game. Just 3:10 later, though, Trinity had
reclaimed the lead for good with another score. Abigail Loar and
Brianna Young scored goals on Sunday against DePauw, both assisted
by Jordan Azar. On Friday night, Young and Kelly Watts scored, and
Loar assisted on the tying goal in the 58th minute.
