Gertz's Double-Double Propels Colorado College To 62-50 Victory Over Southwestern

Trailing 38-36 with 6:14 remaining in the third quarter, CC closed the period on an 8-2 lead and never trailed again.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both sides struggled to find their mark in the opening period with Southwestern shooting 21.1 percent (4-19) and Colorado College 20.0 percent (4-20). A 6-0 run by Colorado College in the last two minutes of the period gave the Tigers' their first lead of the game at 11-10.
  • The second quarter was the best played of the contest as both teams hit 40+ percent from the floor and CC extended its lead to 31-29 at the break. 
  • Shooting woes returned in the third quarter with CC, despite shooting just 22.2 percent (4-18) itself, extending the lead to 44-38 after holding Southwestern to just 14.3 percent (2-14) in the stanza.
  • CC held Southwestern to 24.3 percent (17-70) for the game - over 13 percent lower than its season average. The Tigers were just marginally better themselves at 26.6 percent (17-64) but hit 79.3 percent from the charity stripe (23-29) compared to 58.3 percent (14-24) for the Pirates.

NOTABLES
  • Colorado College's win was just the program's third in SCAC Women's Basketball tournament history, but was its second consecutive in quarterfinal play. The Tigers won last year on its home floor, defeating Centenary, 62-58.
  • The 18 rebounds by Gertz are the second-most in a SCAC women's tournament game. Janice Okeke of Millsaps College had 21 against Trinity in the 2012 championship.
  • CC swept the season series against Southwestern this season, defeating the Pirates on the road Dec. 16 (80-62) and at home Feb. 1 (77-67) before today's quarterfinal win.
  • Friday's match-up was the first between the two schools in SCAC tournament competition.
  • Southwestern ends its season with a 12-14 record.
UP NEXT
Colorado College (12-13) advances to take on Trinity University tomorrow at Noon CT. Trinity is the No. 1 seed with a 14-2 conferene mark (21-4 overall). This will mark the second consecutive year the two have met in the SCAC tournament. Trinity defeated Colorado College, 76-70, in last year's semifinal round.
