SUWANEE, Ga. - Finals gave way to a light schedule this past week in the SCAC with five teams taking the week off. Southwestern fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor for their first loss of the season while Trinity was able to snap their five game losing streak. Looking ahead Millsaps will host Hendrix in the Hanger Dome in the lone conference action this week.

Austin College took the week
off from action this past week. The ‘Roos will return to
action Wednesday night as they host Texas-Dallas.
Birmingham-Southern played a single game at home this
week, defeating Berry College, 87-58. Junior Ashton Spurgin came
off the bench to record a double-double with 12 points and 10
rebounds, while junior Sam Davidson led BSC with 14 points on
4-of-5 shooting. Senior Katelyn Wilson and sophomore Alex Adams
also chipped in 11 points each, and sophomore Erin Moore had 10
points. The Panthers now stand at 5-2 on the season. Wilson leads
the team averaging 10.7 points a contest, while Adams leads with
8.3 rebounds a game and junior Kristian Moody leads with 2.6
assists a game. BSC takes a break for the holidays before returning
to action on New Year’s Eve, hosting Sewanee at 3 p.m.
Centre took the week off from action this past
week. The Colonels will return to action this week with three games
starting Tuesday night on the road at Spalding.
Hannah Hoopingarner and Kalli Kemling combined for 31 points,
including 11 in a row late in the first half, as
Colorado College cruised to a
74-64 victory over Johnson & Wales on Wednesday. Hoopingarner
poured in nine of her 15 points during a 16-3 run that began with
2:06 remaining in the first half that put CC in complete control.
Becky Luetjen gave the Tigers a 45-27 advantage when she buried a
three-pointer from the above the key 2:19 into the second half. The
junior guard finished with 20 points and 11 points for her third
double-double of the season and also dished out a season-best five
assists. Kemling made seven of 14 field-goal attempts and finished
with 16 points, her third game with double-figure points this
season. Marissa Gradoz grabbed eight rebounds, while Sydney
Leichliter and Kemling added seven apiece, to help Colorado College
record a 61-47 advantage on the glass. Emily Wattman-Turner scored
five of her season-high 15 points in overtime to help CC defeat
Johnson & Wales, 86-81, on Saturday in Denver. Wattman-Turner
and Jordy Stephenson drained three-pointers and the Tigers made
five of six free throws during the extra period to complete this
week’s home-and-home sweep of JWU with its first back-to-back
victories of the season. Stephenson made three of four shots from
behind the arc en route to a season-high 14 points. Luetjen poured
in a game-high 23 points, the third time this year she has scored
20 or more points in a game, and had a season-best five steals and
dished out three assists. Kemling also finished with 15 points, the
fourth time in six games she has reached double figures. Colorado
College plays host to Kansas Wesleyan University next Saturday.
Visiting DePauw attempted 27 more field goals
than Millikin, but the Big Blue shot 55 percent from the floor and
sent the Tigers to a 65-59 defeat. DePauw, ranked 8th in the latest
USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches Poll and 10th by D3hoops.com,
dropped to 5-2. Katie Mathews led DePauw with 18 points, all of
which came in the second half. Katie Aldrich added 12, while Alex
Gasaway hauled down nine rebounds.
Hendrix took the week off from action this past week. The
Warriors will return to action this week in the lone conference
match-up on the road at Millsaps on Friday night.
Millsaps took the week off from action last week. The
Majors will return to action this week with three games starting
Monday night hosting Rust. Millsaps will also host Hendrix on
Friday in the lone conference game of the week.
Oglethorpe was off this past week during exams. The
Petrels are back on the court this Friday to face Berry College at
home at 6:00 p.m.
Rhodes could not hold on to a seven point second half
lead, falling to the Rust Lady Bearcats 59-56 in Holly Springs, MS
on December 7th. Lynx forward Sara Olds missed a three pointer at
the buzzer that would have tied the score. Lynx senior LaKeya
McGill led all scorers with 19 points. McGill was 4 of 10 from the
three point line. The Lynx rallied from a 32-30 halftime deficit to
take a 49-42 lead with 11 minutes to play. Rust responded with a
7-0 run to tie the score at 49-49 with 9:11 to play. Both teams
would trade baskets the remainder of the contest and Rust took the
lead for good with 1:05 to play at 57-56. Rhodes missed three shots
in the next possession and were forced to foul Rust with 7 seconds
to play. Rust guard Arielle Taylor hit two free throws with 7
seconds to play to extend the lead to 59-56. Rhodes falls to 1-7
overall and will now prepare for final exams. The Lynx return to
the floor on December 18th against Millsaps.
Sewanee dropped an 80-74 decision to Judson College on
Tuesday night. Dani Kabbes led the way with her third double-double
of the year, scoring 22 points, while pulling down 12 rebounds.
Logan Miller added 18 points and nine rebounds, leaving her just
one rebound shy of a double-double. Claire Elliott added nine
points and four assists, while Clarissa Medley grabbed six
rebounds. The Tigers play next on December 18th, when they travel
to Hiawassee College for a 2:00 p.m. match up.
Southwestern went 1-1 in non-conference action this week,
to move to 7-1 on the year. The Pirates suffered their first loss
of the season on Saturday night, falling to the University of Mary
Hardin Baylor. Southwestern dug themselves an early hole and their
second half comeback ran out of time as they ultimately fell 68-59.
The Pirates returned home on Sunday to face Schreiner University
and after a sloppy start to the game the Pirates reorganized and
tightened up their play down the stretch of the game to win 55-44.
Southwestern has one more game before the holidays. They host Texas
Lutheran University on Friday at noon.
Trinity snapped its five-game losing streak with a
71-62 victory at the University of Dallas on Tuesday night. The
Tigers were led by Abby Dietert’s 24 points, and improved to
2-5 this season. Danielle Hubenak added 18 points (hitting 4-8
three-pointers), while Jana Tucker finished with 13 points and a
game-high 19 rebounds. Trinity will not play again until just after
Christmas, making its home debut in the Trinity Christmas Classic
on December 28-30. The Tigers face off against East Texas Baptist
and Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday and Wednesday. Trinity defeated
Hardin-Simmons 79-69 in the 2009-10 season opener in San Antonio,
and it will be the first meeting (in the SCAC era) for Trinity and
ETBU.
