Women's Basketball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The lone ranked team in the SCAC DePauw, eigth in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 11th in the D3hoops.com poll, traveled to California over the Thanksgiving Holiday and picked up a pair of victories over La Verne and Redlands. This weekend will mark the first action of conference play in 2010-11 with Centre, DePauw, Oglethorpe, Southwestern, Hendrix and Millsaps all at home to host conference tilts.

Austin College took the week off from action this past week. The ‘Roos, 2-1 return to the hardwood Monday evening as they host Texas A&M International.

Birmingham-Southern split this week, dropping its first road game at Troy, 58-35 on Tuesday evening, but rebounding with a big home win over Emory, 85-60 on Sunday afternoon. Against Troy, sophomore Erin Moore led with 10 points, and sophomore Alex Adams led with 10 rebounds. Against Emory, Adams exploded with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 15 rebounds. The Panthers open conference play on the road this weekend against DePauw and Centre.

Centre split a pair of non-conference games last week defeating Mount St. Joseph 75-44 at home prior to Thanksgiving and then falling 82-62 to Transylvania following the holiday. Eleven different players scored in the win over Mount St. Joseph in which the Colonels shot 56.4% (31-55) from the field, including 46.7% (7-15) from the three-point arc and 75.0% (6-8) from the charity stripe. Centre struggled with its shooting against the Pioneers hitting only 31.3% (20-64) of its shots. The Colonels, now 3-2 on the season, will open SCAC play this weekend hosting Rhodes Friday and Birmingham Southern Sunday.

Becky Luetjen tied her career high with 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Colorado College earned its first victory of the season by coming from behind to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan University, 69-52, on Sunday. Luetjen poured in 16 points and had four assists during the second half when the Tigers erased an early eight-point deficit by outscoring the Prairie Wolves 48-23 during the final 17:35. Her double-double was the second in as many days and the 12th of her career. Marissa Gradoz flirted with a triple-double, finishing the game with career highs of 11 rebounds and eight assists to go along with nine points. The Tigers shot 52-percent from the floor in the second half after making only seven of 29 field goal attempts during the first 20 minutes. CC made all 17 of its free-throw attempts. Luetjen was 10-for-10, while Gradoz drained six in a row. The Tigers dropped an 80-77 decision against Finlandia University on Saturday when Jordy Stephenson’s three-pointer with less than four seconds to go went off the rim. CC, which was already playing without junior guard Emily Wattman-Turner, lost a second starter to injury when sophomore forward Kalli Kemling was cut under her eye 1:40 into the game and did not return. Colorado College wiped out a 10-point deficit midway through the second half and nearly clawed its way out of a seven-point hole during the final 36 seconds. Hannah Hoopingarner scored a career-high 22 points for the Tigers, 18 of which came from behind the three-point line, and her steal with six seconds to play gave CC a chance to send the game to overtime. Luetjen had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th career double-double. Gradoz added 12 points, while Sydney Leichliter reached double figures for the second time this season with 10. Colorado College begins conference play next Friday at Hendrix College and completes the two-game road-trip at Millsaps College in Sunday.

#10 DePauw (10th coaches' poll, 12th D3hoops.com) improved to 3-1 with a pair of wins at the California Lutheran Thanksgiving Classic. The Tigers opened with a 76-61 win over La Verne and then defeated Redlands, 63-38. Against La Verne, DePauw trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but shot over 61 percent in the second half for the win. The Tigers took a 62-52 lead with 6:40 left in the game, but the Leopards scored seven consecutive to close to within three at 62-59 with just over four minutes left. The lead was still four before DePauw scored the game's final 11 points. Katie Mathews led DePauw with a career-high 25 points and matched a career-best with eight assists, while Ellie Pearson matched a career-high with 15 points and grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds. Katie Aldrich added 12 points and Lauren Goff followed with 11. The Tigers shot 47.9 percent for the game including 61.8 percent in the second half, while the Leopards shot 40.4 percent. DePauw held a commanding 52-25 edge on the boards and grabbed 24 on the offensive glass which it converted into 26 second-chance points. DePauw shot just under 51 percent for the game and held Redlands to just 31 percent in picking up the win. The Tigers held a 33-27 lead early in the second half before going on an 11-2 run to take a 44-29 advantage with 10:51 left. Redlands briefly closed the margin to 11, but DePauw outscored the Bulldogs 17-3 over the game's final 7:33 for the win. Mathews was the Tigers' lone double-figure scorer with 16, while Leah Freestone grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Kate Walker dished out four assists and totaled four steals in the win. Mathews was named the Classic MVP, while Ellie Pearson was named to the all-classic team. The Tigers hit 50.9 percent for the game including 57.7 percent in the second half, while Redlands hit 31.3 percent for the game and only 27.3 percent in the second half.

Hendrix split its two games last week with a 78-65 loss to University of the Ozarks on Monday and then a 72-52 victory over Rust College on Tuesday. The Warriors now stand at 2-3 on the season. Ozarks drained a barrage of 3-pointers to top Hendrix on Monday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium. The Eagles were 14-of-31 from behind the arc and led by at least 12 points in the last 32:21. The two teams exchanged the lead three times in the first four minutes before the Eagles snagged the final advantage on a layup from junior Lacey Phillips with 16:28 left in the first half. Ozarks went on a 22-5 run over the next six minutes to earn a commanding 25-9 lead. The Eagles led by as much as 20 points on two occasions in the first half and took a 43-25 advantage into the locker room. Ozarks eventually stretched its lead to a game-high 27 points on a 3-pointer from junior April Young with 10:13 left in regulation. The Eagles put it on cruise control and led by at least 13 points the rest of the way. The Warriors had three players in double-digits with junior Katy Ashley-Pauley leading the way at 14 points. Senior Christina Byler added 13 points and first year Jamie Tate scored 12 points. Ashley-Pauley and junior Jordan Henderson paced the team with five assists apiece. Byler posted her first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. She then scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Warriors to a dominant win over Rust College. Hendrix snapped a three-game skid with the win. The Warriors opened the game with a 9-0 run, ignited by a 3-pointer from junior Samantha Devlin and capped by a long ball from Ashley-Pauley with 16:00 left in the first half.Hendrix eventually stretched its lead to 14 points (31-17) with 4:11 left before the break and took a 37-26 margin into the locker room. Rust came out of the locker room with intensity and a full-court press gave Hendrix trouble. The Bearcats clawed their way back into the game and narrowed their deficit to five points (47-42) with 9:53 left in regulation. The Warriors responded with six unanswered points and would not let their lead slip under nine points the rest of the way. Hendrix crashed the boards and out-rebounded Rust 49-25. Tate led the Warriors with 12 rebounds. Byler was close behind with nine boards. Henderson finished with 12 points, while Ashley-Pauley tallied 11 points and a team-high six assists.

Millsaps rebounded this week, getting their record back to an even .500 with a pair of wins over the University of Dallas and Huntingdon College. Both games were close all the way with Shante Morton providing the edge to the Majors in both. Tuesday against the Crusaders Morton scored back-to-back layups to put the Majors in control for the 53-49 win at home then scored 22 points against the Hawks on Sunday to lead the way in the 61-49 win in Montgomery. She had 22 points in both games this week and grabbed 20 rebounds to average a double-double, even if she fell one short on Sunday night with the Hawks. The Majors will not have long to rest as they return to action Monday when they travel up to Holly Springs to take on Rust College in a 5:00 p.m. meeting before coming home this weekend for the conference openers with Austin on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.

Oglethorpe lost their only game over the Thanksgiving break to Piedmont College in Demorest, 67-44. The Lions used a 23-3 run to close out the final 6 minutes of the first half to seize control of the game. The Petrels were done in by cold shooting that saw them only make 6 of 31 first half shots (19%) and only 13 of 62 (21%) for the game. Oglethorpe actually led the Lions 14-12 with 5:45 to play in the first half before the Lions aforementioned run to close the half and take command of the contest with a 35-17 halftime lead. Katie Weeks paced the Petrels with 14 points, 4 rebounds and four steals on the night. Sarah Giles added 11 points, 8 rebounds and two blocks in Oglethorpe's fourth consecutive loss to start the season. At 0-4 on the young season, the Petrels will look to notch their first victory of 2010-11 when they face Agnes Scott in Decatur on December 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Rhodes
took the holiday week off. The Lynx now 1-3 on the season return to action this weekend as they open up SCAC play on the road against Centre and DePauw.

Sewanee was up as many as 13 before the Scotties of Agnes Scott College clawed their way back in the second half and topped the Tigers, 87-80, on Tuesday night. Agnes Scott got two free throws shortly before the halftime break but Sewanee still led, 44-42, at halftime. The Scotties came out of the locker room firing and just five seconds into the period, Tiffany Jones knocked down a three pointer to give Agnes Scott just their second lead of the contest. The visiting Scotties extended their lead to seven, but the Tigers regained the lead, 61-58, halfway through the second, but Agnes Scott went on a 12-4 run to put Sewanee away and take home the win. Dani Kabbes led Sewanee with 19 points and seven rebounds. Claire Elliott added 18 points while Heather Baier pulled down six rebounds. The Tigers travel to Emory University on Tuesday before opening up conference play on Saturday at Oglethorpe.

Southwestern continued to roll along undefeated this season. Tuesday night SU played their home opener against the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets. Southwestern built and early lead and never trailed after the 16 minute mark in the first half as they won easily 84-64. Chelsea Leeder led all scorers with 20 points in the win. SU returned to the road on Saturday and headed up to Dallas Christian to take on the Crusaders. Dallas Christian proved to be no match as the Pirates once again controlled the game, winning 73-40. With the wins Southwestern sits at 4-0 on the year and will face their toughest opponent of the season thus far on Friday night as they open conference action against Trinity at 6:00 pm. Following the SCAC opener Southwestern will once again face soon to be SCAC opponent, the University of Dallas, on Sunday at 2:00 pm.

Trinity lost both of its games last week, playing at Mary Hardin-Baylor and Puget Sound. The Tigers have now lost three straight games for the first time since 2005-06. Trinity will travel to Georgetown, Texas to open SCAC play on Friday at Southwestern University. Last year, the Tigers swept the regular season series from the Pirates, extending Trinity’s win streak to six consecutive regular season games over Southwestern.
