Brianna Pena, Trinity University, Player of the Week (Week 2)

BRIANNA PENA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore shortstop from La Porte, Texas, has been named the SCAC Softball Player of the Week for games played from Monday, February 4th through Sunday, February 10th.

Pena led Trinity’s softball team to a 3-1 record over the weekend, splitting a doubleheader with McMurry before sweeping both games against Hardin-Simmons on Saturday. Pena finished with three hits in three of the four games, going 10-for-16 (.556) overall and cracking a double in each game. She also scored a team-best six runs and drove in two more over the weekend. Pena was 3-for-4 with two RBI in Trinity’s win over McMurry that gave the Tigers a split.

In the extra-inning win to start the DH with Hardin-Simmons, Pena went 3-5 with two runs scored and had a key role in the win. With Trinity down a run in the bottom of the seventh, she led off the inning with a single and came around to score the tying run that sent the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth with the Tigers down 6-5, Pena once again scored to tie the game and set up Trinity’s walkoff win.

This season, Pena is now hitting a team-leading .500 (11-for-22) with two RBI and seven runs scored to tie for the team lead. All four of her doubles this season came during this week’s action and she is now Trinity’s slugging percentage leader at .682.
