LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The 2020 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) softball season saw its first full week of action with six of the league’s seven teams hitting the diamond.

Defending conference and national champion Texas Lutheran University (4-0) opened with four victories, sweeping doubleheaders from Huston-Tillotson and Concordia (Texas) on Monday and Saturday. Rebecca Snow went 7-for-11 over the four contests (.636), posting at least one hit in each game, with two runs scored an RBI. She was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday’s 10-0 game one victory over Concordia (Texas). McKay Bloxham and Kelly Jurden both had four RBIs over the four games which saw TLU outscore its opponents by a cumulative score of 31-2. Jurden, who led the nation in stolen bases last year, posted five thefts opening week. Kayla Oliveira picked up two wins in the circle for the Bulldogs, allowing just two hits while striking out five with no earned runs in 9.1 innings of work. Ashlyn Strother also picked up two wins, allowing just one earned run in 9.2 innings while striking out 11.

The University of Dallas (2-0) also posted a perfect mark to open the 2020 campaign, after a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern (Kansas) on Friday. Mackenzie Tano had five hits in seven plate appearances (.714), with one double, two runs driven in and three runs scored.  Karina Campo had three hits in five at-bats (.600) with a double and two runs scored. Maggie Watts went 1-0 in the circle for the Crusaders, working 5.1 innings and earning the win in relief in Friday’s 15-7 game two victory.

Centenary College (1-2) lost a single game to No. 13 East Texas Baptist on Saturday before bouncing back to split a doubleheader against UT-Dallas on Sunday. After dropping game one 9-2, the Ladies rebounded with a 4-3 wall-off victory in game two. Erin Lewis singled in Kirstyn Gomez with two outs and the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Centenary its first win of the season. Haley Campbell leads the Ladies in hitting after the opening weekend, posting three hits in eight at-bats, including two doubles. Ashley Hunter went the distance in the game two victory, working 7.0 innings and scattering six hits while allowing three earned runs.

Trinity University (0-2) opened the SCAC schedule with a doubleheader lost to Concordia (Texas) on Saturday, February 1. Trinity was shut out 4-0 in the opening game, then avoided the day's second shutout by scoring late in an 8-1 loss in game two. The Tigers stranded 22 runners on base over the two games. Allie Holbrook allowed just two earned runs and struck out a career-high seven hitters in a complete-game effort in the season-opener.

Both Austin College (0-4) and Schreiner University (0-4) suffered a pair of doubleheader sweeps opening week.

Austin College lost to Howard Payne (10-3 and 8-0) and Sul Ross State (11-0 and 10-3). The ‘Roos got two hits, including a double, from both Mari Prazak and Jaide Vidal over the four-game stretch.

Schreiner fell to Hardin-Simmons (4-3 and 12-8) and LeTourneau (2-0 and 5-3). Bri Wodtke had a big first week, going 6-for-11 (.545) with two doubles and two runs driven in. She went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple in the second game of Tuesday’s DH against Hardin-Simmons.

Play continues this weekend with all seven teams in action, including Southwestern University kicking off its season with a doubleheader at McMurry on Friday.
