LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It was the busiest week to date in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball last week as all seven squads were in action, highlighted by Centenary opening the conference portion of its schedule as they hosted Austin College for a four-game set over the weekend.
Trinity (10-7, 4-0) traveled west to Arizona for its spring break swing, posting a 3-2 record with wins over St. Scholastica (12-2), Dickson (4-3) and Cornell College (10-0). Senior outfielder Devon Potter batted a team leading .417 (5-for-12) with two RBI and four runs scored over the five games, hitting a double and a triple to boost her slugging percentage to .667. Her best game came in the win over Cornell College in which she went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Sophomore Allie Holbrook continued to spin it well in the circle for the Tigers, making three appearances going 1-1 with an ERA of 1.50. In 14 innings pitched, Holbrook allowed just three earned runs and stuck out 12.
Centenary (7-10, 4-0) opened league play last weekend sweeping Austin College (0-19, 0-8) to get off to its first 4-0 start in SCAC play in program history. The Ladies are now 6-4 in their last 10 games since the calendar flipped to March. Senior catcher Sydney Hurley was outstanding at the plate, posting a .588 batting average (10-for-17) with six extra base hits, including two home runs and accounted for nine RBI to go along with six runs scored. Senior Nicole Aldridge dazzled in her lone appearance on the week, pitching a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts and scattering just five hits to lead the Ladies to their fifth conference shutout in program history.
Texas Lutheran (13-5, 7-1) stepped outside of conference play last week, posting a 3-1 record, sweeping No. 24 Transylvania and splitting a twin bill against No. 6 East Texas Baptist, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season. Freshman Casey Martin shined at the plate, batting .615 (8-for-13) and driving in six runs. Martin also accounted for three runs scored, one stolen base and produced an on-base percentage of .643 to go along with a .769 slugging percentage. Junior Kayla Oliveira stretched her consecutive appearances streak without allowing an earned run to four last week after posting a 1-0 record in two starts. Oliveira picked up a win against Transy and settled for a no-decision against ETBU. In 11 innings of work she allowed just eight hits and struck out four, raising her total to 27 on the year which is currently third most in the SCAC.
Southwestern (12-4, 5-3) split a doubleheader against No. 24 Transylvania last week it its only action. After falling in the opener, the Pirates responded with a 3-1 victory in game two in part to a two-hit, one-run performance from Celeste Silvas. Silvas has produced a multi-hit performance in four of her last six contests. Junior Bailey Meyer got the win in the circle after pitching six innings, striking out three and allowing just the one run. Junior Nadia Netek was credited with the save, striking out one in her lone clean inning of work.
Schreiner (8-14, 4-4) evened up its league record following a four-game road sweep of Dallas over the weekend. It marked the fourth time in program history the Mountaineers secured a four-game conference sweep. Junior Gabriella Acuna was outstanding in the series with nine total hits, including three multi-hit games. Additionally, Acuna scored a run and drove in another to lead Schreiner at the plate. Junior Hannah Ortiz set the tone for the series in the circle, spinning a complete game victory in the Mountaineers, 2-1, extra inning win. Ortiz allowed just two hits and didn’t allow an earned run while striking out four in eight innings of work.
Dallas (5-15, 0-8) also stepped outside of league play last week splitting doubleheaders against Mississippi University for Women and Judson.
SCAC softball continues this week with three different conference series on the schedule as Austin College travels to Schreiner, Texas Lutheran will face Trinity in San Antonio and Dallas will host Centenary.
