SCAC Softball Recap - Week Seven

SCAC Softball Recap - Week Seven

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - All seven softball teams were in action last week, combining for a 12-6 non-conference record, while six continued conference play.

Every team in the league picked up at least one win last week, highlighted by an 8-0 non-conference home stand from Texas Lutheran University.

The second-ranked Bulldogs came out strong last week, posting an 8-0 record in non-conference play and moving to 19-1 on the season. The team earned wins over Mary Hardin-Baylor, Messiah, Texas-Dallas and La Verne. The Cougars of La Verne are receiving votes in the most recent NFCA poll.

Schreiner University and the University of Dallas each earned series wins last week, both posting 3-1 record in conference play.

The Mountaineers traveled to San Antonio to face Trinity University over the weekend. Schreiner picked up a pair of close wins on Friday, but nothing was closer than the extra-inning contest to kick off Saturday's doubleheader. Trinity held a 2-0 lead heading in to the seventh inning, when the Mountaineers rallied for three runs in the top of the inning to take the advantage. In the bottom half, a walk with the bases loaded would bring in Trinity's game-tying run to send them into extras. Neither team scored in the eighth or the ninth innings, but Schreiner finally broke through in the 10th, with Bailee Arellano coming home on a wild pitch to put SU up 4-3. Trinity's Carli Jones hit a two RBI double in the bottom half of the inning for the walk-off win. The Mountaineers bounced back to take the series finale, 6-0. Schreiner moved to 14-5-1 on the season and 6-2 in conference play, while Trinity is now 11-9 (4-4 in the SCAC).

The conference season began for Austin College as the 'Roos played host to Dallas. The two teams split the opening doubleheader, with Dallas earning an 8-0 win and AC taking the second game 10-8. The Crusaders swept the Sunday games, outscoring Austin College 17-0 between the two contests. After the series, Dallas moved to 4-12 this season and 3-5 in conference play, while Austin College is now 2-10 on the season and 1-3 in the SCAC.

The final conference games of the weekend were the closest, with Southwestern University and Centenary College splitting the four-game series.

Centenary got the first win in Georgetown, 8-3, before the Pirates dominated in a run-rule victory, 13-1. The following day, Southwestern kept the momentum going, earning a 9-0 win in five innings on the strength of a combined one-hitter from pitchers Lindsey Longuet and Bailey Meyer. Centenary prevented the Pirates from taking the series with a 3-2 win to close out the weekend. With the game tied 2-2 heading into the seventh, the Ladies narrowly avoided an extra innings contest as Hallie Smith hit a solo home run to start the inning and score the eventual game-winning run.
