Softball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Austin College picked up the only win for the SCAC this week as they returned to action this past weekend, defeating Huston-Tillotson. Though it was a tough week for the SCAC in the sport of softball, the bats were still hot as many runs were manufactured.

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College split its doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson over the weekend, falling 10-7 in game one before taking a 12-8 victory in game two. Sophia Hernandez had a huge weekend at the plate, going 6-for-8 with five RBI, five runs scored, a double, and two triples, and also earned a save on the mound after pitching two scoreless innings in the 12-8 victory. Taylor Steelman went 3-for-4 in the win, while Haley Clendennen, Emily Lowe, and Victoria Herrera each collected three hits, while Herrera picked up the victory on the mound, striking out four batters in 5.0 innings of work. 

Centenary was idle this past weekend after opening their season a week ago. The Ladies return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 as the Ladies travel to Millsaps for a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m.

Dallas went 0-2 on the week at home in their first games of the 2014 season. On Sunday, in Irving, Texas, the Lady Crusaders fell 8-1 (F/7) and then 7-0 (F/7) to George Fox University-Ore. First-year head coach Beth Krysiak’s squad hosts Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. 2x7. On Sunday, the navy and white welcome Hendrix College-Ark. for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.

Schreiner has not opened the 2014 season yet. They open things up on Saturday, February 22nd as they travel to the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. They will open things up with a doubleheader against Northwood set to begin at 1 p.m. (EST).

Southwestern went 0-4 in games this week, dropping two to Hardin Simmons on the road and two at home to George Fox. Southwestern scored 16 runs in two games against Hardin Simmons but still dropped both contests 11-10 and 9-6. Against George Fox, the Pirates battled back and forth in game one with the Bruins before the long ball caught up with the home team as GFU belted five home runs in the opener en route to a 13-4 win. In game two the Bruins scored in four of the first five innings to hand SU a 7-2 loss. Now 1-5 on the year the Pirates look to regroup as they host Concordia on Wednesday and Houston-Victoria on Sunday. 

Texas Lutheran was idle this weekend after a doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons was cancelled earlier this week due to incliment weather. The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Belton, Texas to take on former conference foe, Mary Hardin-Baylor. First pitch of a doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.

Trinity lost both ends of a mid-week doubleheader against fifth-ranked UT-Tyler on Wednesday, falling to 1-3 overall this season. Senior Brooke Sanchez stands eighth in school history with 139 career hits, while fellow senior Chrissy Armstrong picked up her 100th career hit at the end of last season.  With 20 more hits, Armstrong would be in the top 10, while Sanchez would reach the top five on the all-time list. The Tigers are off this week, but return to action next week in a road doubleheader against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.  The February 25 matchup will begin at 3:00 p.m., and will be the only action of the week for Trinity.  The team returns home March 8, facing off against Cal College of St. Joseph at 1:00 p.m.
