Softball Recap (Week 10) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Texas Lutheran has clinched the No. 1 seed and will host the 2014 SCAC Softball Tournament a couple weeks after opening their new on campus field. Trinity has clinched the No. 2 seed while Southwestern checks in as the No. 3 seed. Four schools, Dallas, Schreiner, Austin College, and Centenary, will duke it out for the final three spots in the tournament on the final weekend of the regular season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College went 1-3 over the weekend, falling to Southwestern on the road. They picked up a win on Sunday, defeating the Pirates 6-0 thanks to a c omplete game shutout by Victoria Herrera and homeruns by Emily Low and Mary Whitworth. Ausitn College goes into its final regular season weekend of the season as they welcome in the University of Dallas. The ‘Roos are among four teams fighting for three spots in the SCAC Softball Tournament. Games will start at 5 p.m. on Friday with Senior Day taking place on Saturday. 

Centenary dropped all four contests at SCAC leading Texas Lutheran this weekend. The Ladies’ bats were held in-check gaining only 10 hits during the series. Erin Crites, Cadie Hancock and Emma Viskozki each totaled two hits to lead the Maroon and White. Lynsi Unruh was saddled with three of the losses on the road while Whitney Patterson gathered the remaining setback. Unruh tossed 12.0 innings while posting an 8.17 ERA. Centenary returns to action this weekend as its hosts Schreiner University in the regular season finale.

Dallas was idle this past week. Dallas hosts Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Tuesday night in a 6 p.m. doubleheader. Looking to hold on to the conference’s No. 4 seed for the SCAC championship tournament, the Lady Crusaders contest sixth-place Austin College in Sherman, Texas, this week -- Friday (5 p.m.; 2x7) and Saturday (1 p.m.; 2x7).

Schreiner had a rough outing this past weekend at Trinity, as they dropped  4 games. The Lady Mountaineers still hold onto 5th place and they look to secure a post-season tournament berth. The Lady Mountaineers take to the road to complete their season with a brief stint at Letourneau, on Thursday. Followed by the conference series  finale at Centenary, beginning Friday.

Southwestern went 3-1 this week to improve to 13-14-1 on the year and 10-6 in the SCAC, securing the #3 seed at the conference tournament in two weeks. The Pirates’ bats were hot on day one as Karen Ramirez and Tessa Galloway both hit for the cycle on the first day. Southwestern won 10-2 and 10-6 on Saturday. Austin College came out strong and controlled the first game on day two, winning easily 6-0. Southwestern blazed in game two as the Pirates’ bats returned to take a 9-0 run-rule win behind Nicole Gibbs’ second no-hitter of the season. The Pirates head to San Antonio to close out the regular season with a four-game series against Trinity. 

Texas Lutheran finished off its regular season in style, sweeping Centenary at home in a four-game series and clinching first place in the SCAC and the right to host this year’s SCAC Championship. The Bulldogs outscored the Ladies 37-0 in the series, holding Centenary to just 10 hits in the four games and extending their shutout streak to 23 innings. In the first doubleheader, the Bulldogs came away with a pair of five-inning victories, opening things up with an 8-0 win and capping the day with a 14-0 victory. They played their only seven-inning affair of the week in the opening game of the second doubleheader, but Samantha Yenne tossed a complete-game one-hitter to keep Centenary at bay. They finished things up with a 10-0 shutout. The Bulldogs finished the series with a .459 team batting average, racking up eight extra-base hits and stealing 13 bases.

Trinity swept a four-game SCAC series at home against Schreiner University, recording four consecutive shutouts, and outscoring the Mountaineers 33-0. The Tigers won a pair of 8-0 games to open the series on Saturday, then won 11-0 and 6-0 on Sunday to finish off the weekend.  Trinity pitchers allowed just five total hits in the four games, including the 13th no-hitter in Trinity history.  Katie Castillon tossed the no-hitter to open the second day of action, which followed her three-hit shutout performance in game two.  Kaci Wellik was outstanding as well over the weekend, throwing a pair of one-hit shutouts, and striking out 16 batters in 12 total innings of work. This weekend, Trinity finishes off its regular season schedule with a four-game SCAC weekend series against Southwestern University.  The teams split a four-game series during the regular season in Georgetown, Texas, last year.  Trinity won 4-0 and 2-1 on the first day, then Southwestern swept day two with wins of 6-2 and 4-3.  During the SCAC Tournament, Southwestern won two of three matchups between the two teams, including the final two games to win the SCAC Championship.
