LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Texas Lutheran moved into one game of clinching home field at the SCAC Championships as they swept Schreiner to go to 17-1 on the season. A win over Centenary this Friday will find TLU hosting the SCAC Softball Championships at their new home field. Southwestern also went 2-0 to propel into third place while Trinity added a 3-1 weekend to maintain second place.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 2-2 over the weekend,
topping Hillsdale Baptist College twice while falling twice to Our
Lady of the Lake University. The ‘Roos opened the weekend
with a 7-0 loss to OLLU before topping HBC 9-2 on Friday, and
finished the weekend with an 8-0 win over HBC and a 5-4 extra
inning loss on Saturday. Taylor Steelman batted .429 and Sophia
Hernandez had an outstanding weekend both on the mound and at the
plate, batting .385 with two doubles and two RBI while also going
1-1 with a 1.65 ERA and 11 strikeouts on the mound. Mary Whitworth
batted .300 and smacked her third homer of the season, which came
in the fifth inning in the 8-0 win over Hillsdale for her second
walk-off homer of the season.
Centenary totaled a 1-3 record over the weekend in a series with Trinity University. After claiming the opening contest against the Tigers, 3-2, the Ladies dropped the following three outings. Nicole Warren paced the squad with a .333 batting average collecting four hits in 12 at-bats. Whitney Patterson led the Ladies with three RBI. Lysni Unruh took three of the four decisions in the circle going 1-2. Laura Perriloux collected a setback on the rubber. Unruh tallied a 7.00 ERA in 21 innings of work. Perriloux tossed 3.2 frames. The Tigers posted a .469 average at the plate. Centenary returns to action this weekend when the Ladies travel to Texas Lutheran.
Dallas went 0-4 on the week. On Tuesday, in Richardson, Texas, the Lady Crusaders fell 9-0 (F/5) and then 8-0 (F/5) to the University of Texas-Dallas. On Saturday, in Irving, Texas, the navy and white were bested 6-3 (F/8) and then 9-1 (F/6) by conference-foe Southwestern. Sunday’s doubleheader was cancelled due to rain. Dallas has no games this week, but will wrap their 2014 home slate on Tuesday, April 15, with a 6 p.m. doubleheader versus Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Southwestern swept the double header on Saturday 6-3, 9-1 against the University of Dallas before being forced to cancel Sunday’s games due to weather. Cozette Palmer found her groove on the mound as she threw a no-hitter in five innings in relief in game one and allowed just five hits in game two. The wins improve SU to 11-14-1 on the year and 7-5 in the SCAC to sit in third place with two weekends to play. The Pirates return home to face Austin College on Saturday and Sunday.
Texas Lutheran needs just one more win to clinch the right to host this year’s SCAC Softball Championship after a dominant road sweep of Schreiner. The Bulldogs outscored the Mountaineers 62-11 in the four games, batting .451 as a team and hammering 19 extra-base hits, including five home runs. In the series-opening doubleheader, the Bulldogs won the second game 23-7. Those 23 runs are the most they’ve scored since 1997 and fifth most in program history.
Trinity went 3-3 overall last week, but did take three out of four SCAC games this weekend against Centenary College. The Tigers lost 9-1 and 4-2 at Mary Hardin-Baylor early in the week, then opened their four-game SCAC series with a 3-2 loss to Centenary. Trinity’s week took a major turn at that point, outscoring the Ladies 36-8 over the final three games – winning 18-6, 10-2, and 8-0 to win the weekend series. Trinity returns home this weekend, facing off against Schreiner University for a four-game SCAC weekend series. The Tigers swept a non-conference doubleheader from Schreiner last season, winning 8-5 and 7-2.
