LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The field is set as the SCAC Softball Tournament gets underway on Saturday in Seguin, Texas. Schreiner, Austin College, and Dallas clinched the final three spots in the SCAC Tournament and just Texas Lutheran, Trinity, and Southwestern in Seguin.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 3-1 in the final weekend
of the regular season against the University of Dallas, taking both
games Friday by scores of 6-2 and 2-1 before splitting on Saturday,
winning 4-3 in game one and losing 7-5 in game two. The ‘Roos
head into the SCAC tournament with a record of 17-21, with those 17
wins matching the highest single season total since the program
became an NCAA varsity sport in 2007. Victoria Herrera made history
for Austin College as well, striking out 21 batters in 16.0 innings
to become the first ‘Roo softball player to surpass 100
strikeouts for a season. Herrera now has 115 on the year and went
1-1 with a save, striking out 10 batters in each of her two starts.
Mallory Rossmann batted .556 for the week, and Mary Whitworth hit
.364 with three doubles and five RBI. Briana Hernandez homered
twice and drove in four runs in the series.
Centenary dropped all four contests this weekend against Schreiner University. Seniors Whitney Patterson and Lynsi Unruh paced the Ladies at the plate in their final weekend series. Unruh went 5-for-11 at the dish while Patterson was 4-for-15. Freshman Dambra Perkins tallied a team-best four RBI for the weekend. Unruh started all four contests in the circle for the Ladies and logged three complete-game efforts. Unruh pitched 25.0 innings and struck out 17 to conclude her career among the program’s leaders in strikeouts.
Dallas went 1-3 on the week in conference competition. On Friday, in Sherman, Texas, the Lady Crusaders were bested 6-2 (F/7) and then 2-1 (F/7) by Austin College. On Saturday, head coach Beth Krysiak’s squad split with the Lady ‘Roos. They navy and white lost 4-3 (F/7), before winning 7-5 (F/7) to ensure a spot in the SCAC championship tournament. Dallas faces Southwestern in a 2 p.m. first pitch on Friday in Seguin, Texas.
Schreiner bounced back after a rough stretch of games that put their postseason dreams in jeopardy. The Mountaineers swept their final four conference games to advance to the postseason for the first time since 2009 and the first time for second year head coach Jessica Peterka. Schreiner was led by Sr. infielder, Victoria Alcozer, who drove in nine RBI’s, So. Infielder, Holley Molenaar who had 49 putouts and Fr. Pitcher Destiny Rodriguez, who earned two wins. The Lady Mountaineers will face off against the Austin College Roos in the first round of the Conference tournament on Friday in Seguin, Texas at 12:00pm.

Southwestern closed out the regular season by going 1-3 against Trinity University over the weekend. On day one, Trinity scored runs early in the game to hand the Pirates a pair of losses 1-0, 7-3. Southwestern scored a run of their own in the first inning of game one on day two and hung on for a 1-0 win before falling 3-0. Southwestern ends the regular season at 15-19-1 overall and 11-9 in the SCAC. They enter the conference tournament as the #3 seed, facing the University of Dallas on Friday at 2 p.m. in Seguin.
Texas Lutheran finished off its regular season two weeks ago by sweeping Centenary. They will be the host of the 2014 SCAC Softball Tournament this weekend in Seguin. They received a bye for being the No. 1 seed and will take on the winner of Schreiner/Austin College at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will be looking for their first SCAC Championship as it is their first year in the SCAC
Trinity took three out of four games in its final series of the regular season against Southwestern University over the weekend. The Tigers swept a doubleheader to start the series on Friday afternoon, winning 1-0 and 7-3. Trinity then split on the final day, falling 1-0, but bouncing back with a 3-0 shutout to finish off Saturday’s action. Senior Chrissy Armstrong broke the school records for games played and games started by starting all four games this weekend. Trinity secured the second seed in the SCAC Tournament, which will begin on Friday, April 25. The Tigers receive a bye as the No. 2 seed, and will face the winner of Southwestern and Dallas on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.
