Trinity's Wellik; Schreiner's Alcozer Named SCAC Softball Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Senior infielder Victoria Alcozer of Schreiner University and sophomore pitcher Kaci Wellik of Trinity University were named SCAC Softball Players of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

 

 

 

 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
Games of  April 14th – 20th

VICTORIA ALCOZER OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a senior infielder from Belton, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Softball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 14th through Sunday, April 20th.

Alcozer was absolutely dominant offensive weekend as she led the Schreiner Mountaineers to a four game sweep over Centenary to clinch the No. 4 seed in the SCAC Softball Tournament.

Alcozer went 7-for-16 for the weekend including two doubles, a grand slam, and nin RBIs to pace the potent Mountaineer offense. 

Alcozer hit 5-for-9 in the pair of wins on Friday, driving in five runs including three in the second game. After a 2-0 win, Alcozer's grand slam proved to be the difference in game two as the Mountaineers won 9-6.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore infielder Mary Whitworth of Austin College had a big weekend to help Austin College go 3-1 against UD, batting .364 with a .636 slugging percentage and a .462 on base percentage. Sophomore infielder Erin Begle of Dallas hit 6-for-13 over the weekend, with a double, homerun, and six RBIs. Senior infielder Karen Ramirez of Southwestern hit .333 over the weekend, going 4-12 from the plate with one double and two runs scored. Junior catcher Caitlynn Dykes of Trinity hit .600 (6-10) over the four games, driving in three RBI to move into third place in Tiger career history.  She picked up a hit in each game of the series, but it was game two that was her best.  Dykes went 4-4 with two RBI to lead Trinity to a 7-3 victory. Centenary  did not nominate anyone. Texas Lutheran was idle.

 

SCAC PITCHER-OF-THE-WEEK
Games of  April 14th – 20th

KACI WELLIK OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore right handed pitcher from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 14th through Sunday, April 20th.

Wellik continued her hot streak with two more shutout victories over the weekend, leading the Tigers to a 3-1 series win over Southwestern.

Wellik tossed a pair of two-hit shutouts over the weekend, extending her streak to five consecutive shutouts in her last five outings.  This weekend, she gave up just two hits in each game, pitching 14 total innings, and recording nine strikeouts.  

For the season, Wellik leads Trinity with a 12-8 record and an ERA of 2.52 in 122.1 innings. She has recorded six shutouts in her 16 complete games this year, recording 100 strikeouts and walking just 16 total batters. 
 
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman pitcher Victoria Herrera of Austin College made Austin College history by becoming the first pitcher in program history to strike out 100 batters in a season, as she whiffed 21 batters in 16.0 innings of work over three appearances to earn one win and a save. Freshman pitcher Katherine Lee of Dallas pitched 25.0 innings, allowing eight earning runs while striking out 17 over the weekend. Freshman pitcher Destiny Rodriguez of Schreiner went 2-0 over the weekend against Centenary. Rodriguez accounted for 17 innings pitched, only allowing four earned runs. Freshman pitcher Nicole Gibbs of Southwestern posted a 1.93 era, going 1-1 over the weekend. In 14 innings of work she allowed three earned runs on 13 hits while walking five and striking out one. Centenary did not nominate anyone. Texas Lutheran was idle.
