
SUWANEE, Ga. - The Trinity Tigers have won seven straight contests, the longest such streak since the Texas Tigers won eight in a row back in 2007. Trinity opened up SCAC play with a four game sweep of Dallas sitting a top the standings in the Western Division, while Rhodes swept the Purple Tigers of Sewanee and sit a top the Eastern Division.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College took
one of its four weekend games against Southwestern, bringing the
team's season record to 5-17 on the year. The 'Roos opened the
series with a 4-0 victory before falling by scores of 8-7, 8-0 and
6-4. Charlotte Trudell had a big weekend at the plate, batting .429
with a double and three runs scored. In the series opening victory,
Jessica Baker launched a three run homer to help lift Austin
College to the win. The 'Roos are home twice this week after having
been on the road for just over a month, beginning with a
doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons tomorrow evening.
Birmingham Southern went 6-2 this week, playing
two NAIA schools early on the road and then returning home for a
conference series with Millsaps. BSC swept Spring Hill College in
Mobile, 2-1, 2-1, and split with AUM in Montgomery, 1-0, 8-0. The
Panthers then went 3-1 against Millsaps over the weekend. Senior
Ashley Bice led the team this week at the plate, going 11-25 (.440)
with a triple and a home run as well as four RBI. Freshman pitcher
Bethany Fronk was 3-0 in the circle, senior Ronni Ferris was 2-1,
and senior Beth Lefler was 1-1. Fronk also had three saves, while
Ferris led with 18 strikeouts in eight games. BSC goes on the road
this weekend, traveling to Memphis to face Rhodes for a conference
series.
After having two games cancelled due to weather,
Centre played only twice last week losing both
games to Berry. A last inning run gave the Vikings a 3-2 win in
game one of the doubleheader. The Colonels then fell 7-3 in the
nightcap to fall to 7-10 overall. Centre is scheduled to host
Millsaps this weekend.
Dallas softball team (8-16, 0-4) fell in all four
contests this past week to SCAC rival Trinity. The Crusaders
struggled from the plate only scoring two runs over the course of
the weekend. Dallas returns to action hosting Austin College in a
conference showdown over the weekend starting on Saturday.
The Warriors went 6-4 in their spring break trip to Florida which
started last Sunday. Hendrix won four of their
last five in the Sunshine State and recorded three shutouts during
the trip. For the trip, freshman shortstop Michael Larabee led the
team by hitting .424 (14-of-33) with seven runs scored, four
doubles and three stolen bases. Junior pitcher/first baseman Ashley
Halbert hit .321 with a home run and six driven in and was 4-1 in
the circle with two shutouts and a 1.20 earned run average. Senior
left fielder Kaylen Stevenson hit .318 with a triple during
the trip and sophomore second baseman Catelyn Gibbs hit .306 with
four runs scored and five sacrifice bunts. The Warriors will begin
SCAC play this weekend for a four-game series at Southwestern.
Millsaps Team opened their conference weekend up
in Birmingham against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers. The Majors
dropped two on Saturday, before returning to split on Sunday.
Millsaps dropped Game One, 6-2. Sophomore Caroline Thompson and
junior Emily Collins each had multi-hit games while Hewitt had two
RBIs. Sophomore Laurel Jones took the loss for the Majors as she
pitched 5.1 innings while giving up two earned runs. BSC then came
back and took it to Millsaps, defeating them 7-1. The Majors got a
complete game shutout from sophomore Laurel Jones to take Game One
1-0 before falling to the Panther in Game Two 6-3. Jones gave up 11
hits in the first game, but she did not give anybody any free
passes and continued to get out of tough situations as she held the
Birmingham-Southern scoreless through seven innings of work to earn
the win. Junior Emily Collins took the loss for Millsaps in Game
Two. Sophomore Allyson Christian had a phenomenal game going
2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Junior Megan Yglesias added a
multi-hit game going 2-for-4 in the loss. Millsaps is now
6-16 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC. They hit the road next weekend as
they head up to Danville, Kentucky for conference action against
the Centre Colonels in a four game series. Game One and Two are on
Saturday with first pitch beginning at 12 p.m.
Rhodes ended their week on a high note with a
four game sweep of conference foe, Sewanee, running their current
winning streak to six games. Rhodes was aided by solid
pitching, sound defense and a productive offense, as the Lynx
outscored their opponents 44-6 over the one week stretch.
This upcoming weekend Rhodes will play host to Birmingham Southern
and two very special events. Saturday, the Lynx will hold
their first annual Pink the Park Game, raising funds and awareness
for breast cancer prevention and research. On Sunday, the
Lynx will celebrate Senior Day at the ball park, honoring this
year?s graduating class prior to their last home games.
Game times on Saturday are at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm; Sunday?s games
are at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.
Sewanee opened SCAC play with four losses at
rival Rhodes this past weekend. The Tigers were hurt by a lack of
offense. Sewanee scored only two runs in four games. The Tigers
were led by freshman Kayla Sewell who finished with four hits on
the weekend. This week, Sewanee will take on Rust College. The
Tigers and Rust were previously scheduled to play on March 9th,
however those contests were moved due to tough weather
conditions.
Southwestern opened SCAC action this weekend with
a four game series against Austin College. The Pirates were slow to
start and allowed four runs to Austin College in one inning and
didn't have the answer as they fell 4-0 in game one on Saturday.
The bats continued to stall out through the majority of the second
game until they sprung to life in the bottom of the seventh. With
the score tied 4-4 after six innings both teams were tough at the
plate. Austin College pushed across three to lead by three, but
Southwestern got down to work and went on a tear to score four runs
with one out to take the game 8-7. SU continued to ride the
offensive wave into game one on Sunday. Two runs in the third and
six in the fourth coupled with outstanding pitching from Lyndsy
Maus gave Southwestern the 8-0 run-rule victory. The Pirates struck
early again, scoring three runs in the first two innings and never
looked back en route to a 6-4 win. Southwestern moves to 13-12 on
the season and 3-1 in conference action. They remain at home to
face Hendrix College for a four game series beginning on Saturday
afternoon.
Trinity opened SCAC play with a four-game weekend
sweep of the University of Dallas, recording three shutout
victories, and out-scoring the Crusaders 43-2 in the four games.
The Tigers opened the weekend with an 8-0 victory, followed by a
10-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader. On Sunday, Sydney
Friday pitched her second shutout of the weekend in a 9-0 victory,
and the Tiger offense exploded for a 16-0 win in the series finale.
Friday also moved to second in Trinity history in career strikeouts
over the weekend. Trinity pitchers Sydney Friday and Lauren Mercado
gave up zero earned runs on the weekend, recording 21 strikeouts,
and holding the opposition to a .149 batting average. The Tigers
will play just one doubleheader this week, traveling to Austin,
Texas to face Concordia University for the second time this season.
The doubleheader is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start on Wednesday,
March 28.
