LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - All eight of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference cross country teams opened their 2018 campaigns this past weekend.

Texas Lutheran and Trinity got the 2018 season started in the early hours of Friday morning, with the TU men sweeping both team and individual honors at their Alamo City Opener at Olmos Basin Park. The Tiger men finished on top of the 5K race, beating Our Lady of the Lake 25 to 33. Sophomore Harry Bellow ran the 5K for the first time in his collegiate career, and emerged as the champion with a time of 16:02.0. TLU, who only brought three runners to the race, was led by junior Caleb Calderon who came home in sixth place overall. Calderon crossed the line in 16:38.7.

Also on Friday, Johnson & Wales opened its 2018 campaign at the Trojan Invitational hosted by Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas. The Wildcats finished in third place with a team score of 77 points and junior Bryce Moore was the first J&W runner across the finish line at 16:51 for a ninth-place individual finish. 

On Saturday, Austin College and Dallas competed against each other and other Texas schools at the Dallas Baptist Patriot Opener. Austin College finished two points better than UD and finished sixth in the eight-team field. Freshman Raymond Navarro of Austin College led all SCAC runners with a 23rd place finish along the 8K course in a time of 28:07.6. Junior John James of Dallas was top among Crusaders runners with a time of 28:45.3.

Junior Tony Calderon posted a sixth-place finish among collegiate runners and led the Colorado College men's cross country team to fourth place at the season opening Rust Buster meet, hosted by UCCS at North Monument Valley Park.

Southwestern, running as the host school, placed second of six teams at the Southwestern Opener early Saturday morning. The Pirates were led by a third place finish by junior Joshua Im who completed the 5K course in a time of 16:52.73. Schreiner also competed at the Southwestern Opener, placing sixth. The Mountaineers were paced by freshman Refugio Montelongo who traversed the 5K course in a time of 18:58.2.
