SCAC Announces 2014 Men's Track and Field Postseason Awards

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.
 – After exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), the league office today announced its 2014 Men's Outdoor Track & Field postseason awards.

Will Paulus of Trinity University was selected as SCAC Men's Track Athlete-of-the-Year while Joey Quintero of Southwestern University was voted SCAC Men's Field Athlete-of-the-Year. Stephen Mason of Trinity took home the SCAC Men's Track & Field Newcomer-of-the-Year honors while the Trinity coaching staff, led by head coach Marcus Whitehead, was selected Men's Track & Field Staff-of-the-Year.

Paulus, a senior from Burlington, Wis., had an excellent year on the track to lead the Tigers all season long. At the 2014 SCAC Championship, he won the 200m, 400m, and ran a leg of the championship 4x400 team. Paulus is the first male athlete in SCAC history to win the 200m and the 400m at the SCAC Championship as the Tigers cruised to their second consecutive title. Paulus is now ranks 4th in the 200m and 3rd in the 400m in Trinity Tiger Track and Field history. 

Quintero, a senior from Karnes, Texas, had an outstanding season to lead the Southwestern men's team in 2014. Quintero tied for overall high points scored at the recent SCAC Men's Track & Field Championship. He won the Hammer with a toss of 34.77m ranking him No. 1 on the SCAC performance list. Quintero also placed third in third additional events; shotput (11.36m), discus (32.75m), and the javelin (38.12m). He finished in the Top 5 of all four throwing categories on the SCAC Performance List.

Mason, a freshman from Pearland, Texas, was outstanding in Trinity's throwing events in 2014. Mason tied for SCAC Male Athlete of the Meet honors with Quintero with the two standouts chalking up 28 points each. At the SCAC Championship, Mason won the men's discus with a mark of 35.88 meters, and placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 37.72 meters. Earlier in the meet, Mason was runner-up in the shot put (11.53 meters) and placed third in the hammer throw (31.94 meters). Mason's big day was a major part to Trinity making history, scoring a conference record 289 points to cruise to their ninth conference title.

Finally, the SCAC Men's Track & Field Staff-of-the-Year honor went to Trinity's staff after another outstanding season. Trinity won its second consecutive SCAC men's track & field championship in dominant fashion, winning by a decisive 133 points.
