AUSTIN CERVANTES OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a senior player from Ennis, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for matches played from Monday, March 28 through Sunday, April 3. (SCAC Men's Tennis Weekly Report - Week 9)
Cervantes was instrumental in the Mountaineers snapping their five-match losing streak with an epic come from behind victory over Diego Martinez of UMHB at the No. 4 singles line last Wednesday. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Cervantes roared back winning the second and third set, 6-2, 6-4, to secure Schreiner’s 5-4 team win over UHMB. Cervantes improved to 4-4 on the year at the No. 4 singles line.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
First-year Eric Liao of Trinity put together his first victory over a NCAA I opponent in the Tigers' matchup with Nicholls State University in San Antonio Friday night as he was well on his way to a straight-sets effort before winning on retirement. The Trinity rookie went on to break a 3-3 deadlock with a three-set clincher against NJCAA second-ranked Tyler Junior College.
