LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Inclement weather forced many cancellations this week as Trinity and Southwestern were the only Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tennis teams to take the court.
No. 17 Trinity split matches on Friday, edging No. 4 Laredo Community College in the opening match but falling to Division I opponent Incarnate Word to finish the day. Doubles play proved to be the difference for the Tigers in their 4-3 victory over LCC, with all three pairs picking up wins. All three of Trinity's victories in singles play went to extra frames with No. 4 Wilson Hamilton defeating Juan David Ramierez 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), No. 5 Jace Akagi-Okuma downing Adian Martinez 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 and No. 6 Tilden Oliver topping Rodrigo Mere 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. In the loss to UIW, No. 2 doubles pair Wilson Hamilton and Christian Settles earned the lone victory of the day for the Tigers, overcoming Paco Bendana/Caleb Dyer 7-6 (7-4).
Southwestern returned to action last week, earning a 9-0 decision over Howard Payne on Saturday. In doubles play, No. 1 Hunter Bajoit/Carlos Rodero took their match with ease, defeating Denardo/Perez 8-0. No. 2 pair Tashawn Treadwell/Jeremy Wilson took their match 8-2 while the No. 3 match was a walkover, favoring the Pirates. SU was dominant in singles play, giving up just five total games to opponents as No. 1 Max Pearson outplayed Dominic Denardo 6-0, 6-1, No. 2 Alonso Fernandez defeated Albert Hernandez 6-1, 6-0, No. 3 Tyler Stevens overtook Rudy Perez 6-1, 6-2 and No. 4 Jeremy Wilson swept Tevin Stevens 6-0, 6-0.
SCAC men's tennis play continues on Tuesday when Schreiner takes on Howard Payne on the road.
