LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Five of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis teams competed this past week.
Austin College hosted McMurry University to begin its season. A match between the 'Roos and the University of Texas-Dallas was cancelled due to weather issues.
Centenary College traveled to Millsaps College, falling 9-0 to the Majors.
Trinity University took on NCAA Division II #23 St. Edwards University, topping the Hilltoppers in a close 5-4 match. The Tigers also took on Division I University of Incarnate World, but fell 4-2.
Southwestern University and Schreiner University met in a non-conference battle. The Pirates ended the match with an 8-1 win on the men's side.
Schreiner battled both Sul Ross State University and Dallas Baptist University Friday. Southwestern also took on Sul Ross State this week, defeating the Lobos 9-0.
Austin College
The 'Roos kicked off their season at home this week against McMurry, but fell 9-0 to the War Hawks. The No. 3 doubles pair of Jeff Kubena and Erik Meendsen got the closest to taking down a War Hawks duo, falling 8-4 in their match. In the No. 1 singles spot, Cedric Ambulo fell 6-2, 6-2 before Adam Dokos and Preston Glasscock dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, by identical 6-3, 6-2 marks.
Centenary College
The Gents traveled to Jackson, Miss. to take on Millsaps, but weren't able to come up with a win, dropping the match 9-0. The Gents weren't able to challenge the dominant Majors in the doubles' portion, falling 8-0 in all three matches. In singles, Stafford Lyons was the only Gent able to earn a set-point, but fell 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers played three matches this week, beginning with an 8-1 win over Sul Ross State. Nick Pena and Dayton Hancock earned an 8-1 win in doubles, while senior duo Austin Carrola and Stephen Rogers notched an 8-5 win. In the No. 3 match, Teg Lozano and Christian Casillas cruised to a 7-0 lead, but eight straight games from the SRSU duo gave Lozano and Casillas the opportunity to force a tie breaker. After falling behind 4-1, the Mountaineer duo rallied for the victory. Carrola, Pena, Hancock and Lozano, in flights No. 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively, all earned straight set victories. In the afternoon, the team battled Dallas Baptist, but fell 4-5. In doubles, the pair of Carrola/Rogers fell 8-3 and Hancock/Pena dropped the No. 2 spot 8-6. Lozano teamed up with Isaac Vasquez in the No. 3 spot, earning an 8-2 win over the DBU pair. In singles, Pena won 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 in the No. 2 spot, Josh Ramirez earned a 6-4, 6-1 win and Teg Lozano took the No. 5 singles 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. To finish out a busy weekend, the Mountaineers hosted Southwestern, falling 1-8 to the Pirates. The No. 2 doubles team of Rogers/Casillas earned the Mountaineers lone point on the day, winning their match 9-8.
Southwestern University
The Pirates had a successful weekend, facing Schreiner and Sul Ross State in dual action Saturday, dropping just one match all day for 8-1 and 9-0 wins, respectively. Schreiner took one doubles match from the Pirates in the No. 2 spot, but Southwestern bounced back to win all six singles matches. Against SRSU, no Pirate allowed more than six points across throughout the entire set. Nickoloz Snovely and Grant Gideon teamed up in the No. 1 doubles spot to defeating the SRSU pair 8-1. Rod Khansari and William Ellis took the No. 2 doubles 8-2 and Oliver Farmen/Sam McCready earned a No. 3 win 8-1. Snovely and Khansari highlighted the singles matches in the No. 1 and No. 6 spots, respectively, allowing just three SRSU points between the two matches.
Trinity University
To begin the week, the No. 3 ranked Tigers faced off against the NCAA Division II No. 23 ranked Hilltoppers of St. Edwards, defeating their opponent 5-4. The Tigers swept the doubles matches, highlighted by an 8-5 win in the No. 1 spot from the top-ranked duo in the nation, Aaron Skinner and Jordan Mayer. Pabloe Diaz Boom and Eliot Guin teamed up in the No. 3 match 8-4. Adam Krull and Clayton Niess earned a hard fought 8-6 win in the No. 2 line, diving the Tigers a 3-0 edge heading into singles. Krull fell in the No. 1 spot, but Mayer won a second-set tiebreaker to take the No. 3 spot 6-0, 7-6. In No. 2 singles, Skinner posted a 6-4, 7-6 win to clinch the match. The Tigers took on Division I Incarnate World Saturday, but fell 4-2. The Tigers opened up the match against UIW by winning two of the three doubles. Mayer and Skinner took No. 1 doubles 8-1, while Krull and Niess took the No. 2 line 8-4. In No. 1 singles, Krull earned the Tigers other point of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
