LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Six of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tennis teams competed this week.
Austin College faced three opponents, going 1-2 on the week. Centenary College took on SCAC opponents, Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University.
Trinity University faced NCAA Division I University of Texas at San Antonio.
Austin College
The ‘Roos took on three opponents this week, going 1-2. They began with a match against Division II Dallas Baptist University, falling 6-3. In singles action, Jeff Kubena got his first straight-set win of the season in the sixth line, 6-2, 6-2. Three Kangaroos took their match to a third set as Daniel Oxenreiter earned a win and Erik Meendsen earned AC’s final point in the second line. The following day, the ‘Roos grabbed their first win of the season, defeating Southwestern Christian University 8-1. Jacob Morgan and Kubena scored the first doubles point of the season for AC in the No. 3 spot, while Cedric Ambulo and Meendsen (No. 1) sent their match into a tiebreaker, taking the break 7-4. Oxenreiter and David Smith (No. 2) also went to a tiebreaker, completing the doubles sweep. The only singles match that the ‘Roos dropped was a three-set battle in the top spot, where Ambulo fell 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (4). Meendsen also needed a third set to decide his match in the second line, but he won, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (7). Oxenreiter (No. 3), Morgan (No. 4), Smith (No.5) and Kubena (No. 6) each won their matches in straight sets. To close out the week, AC took on the University of Texas-Dallas, but fell 7-2 to the Comets. The duo of Ambulo and Meendsen took the top doubles match, 8-5, but UTD headed into singles play with a 2-1 lead. The Comets swept the top four singles matches. In the No. 2 spot, Meendsen took the first set before his opponent rallied back to force a tie breaker and win, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (7). Smith earned the ‘Roos final point in the fifth line in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Centenary College
The Gents faced off against two SCAC opponents this week, Southwestern and Texas Lutheran. In their first match, they took on the Pirates in Georgetown, but fell 9-0. The No. 1 doubles pair of Stafford Lyons and Andrew Borel were the only duo to notch a game point, falling 8-1 in their match. The second and third line in doubles went to SU, uncontested by the Gents. In singles play, Lyons put up the strongest effort, but fell, 6-2, 6-2. Kane Kershaw and Chris Matthews were each able to mark one game point in the second and third lines, respectively, while the remaining singles matches went to SU, 6-0, 6-0. The following day, Centenary took on TLU, falling 9-0 to the Bulldogs. They couldn’t get things going in the match as they fell 8-0 in all three singles matches. Lyons marked the Gents only game point of the day in the No. 1 singles match as he fell 6-0, 6-1.
Colorado College
The Tigers took on Division II Metro State University this week, but fell 9-0 to the regionally-ranked Roadrunners. MSU swept through doubles action, winning the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, 8-3, and the No. 2 spot 8-4. In singles play, CC battled it out, but couldn’t come up with a match win. In the No. 1 spot, Jason Gutierrez fell 6-2, 7-5, while Jack Burger dropped the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-3. In the third spot, Casey Shaw fell 6-1, 6-3 and Taylor Delehanty fought a tough battle in the No. 4 line, but eventually lost 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2). Ross Sherman rallied back for a second set win to force a tiebreaker in his match at No. 5, but in the end, he couldn’t win the breaker, falling 6-4, 7-6, 11-9.
Southwestern University
The Pirates took down SCAC opponent Centenary College in their only match this week, winning 9-0. The duo of Niko Snovely and Grant Gideon gave up the Gents’ only point in doubles as they won their match 8-1 in the top line. William Ellis/Rod Khansari (No. 2) and Ayinde Hall/Alexander Wong (No. 3) each won their respective matches with 8-0 scores. In singles action, the Pirates continued their success. Caleb Rightmer took the top line 6-2, 6-2. While Trevor Searle and Hunter Snell each gave up just one point in their wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Alvaro Rojas (No. 4), Armando Garcia (No. 5) and Derek Grass (No. 5) each won their matches with 6-0, 6-0 marks.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs took on Centenary this week, putting together a nearly perfect performance on the courts, winning 9-0. TLU gave up just one total point on the day, coming in the No. 1 singles match as Cliff Pack won 6-0, 6-1. In doubles play, the Bulldogs posted 8-0 marks in all three matches. Cliff Pack paired up with Sanio Dizdarevic in the top spot, Eric Beckenbach and Wade Dillenback played in the second line and Kyle Thompson and Greg Nelson took the third. In singles play, the No. 2-No. 6 matches were all decided by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Sanio Dizdarevic took the second spot, Ryan Beene played No. 3, Thompson was No. 4, Beckenbach was No. 5 and Nelson closed it out at No. 6.
Trinity University
The Tigers took on Division I University of Texas at San Antonio this week, but fell 6-1. The Tigers only victory came at No. 5 singles as Chas Mayer prevailed 6-1, 6-2. Mayer has now won three matches in a row, and four of the last five. He improved his singles record to 9-7 for the season. UTSA won all three double matches and claimed the point, playing by Division I rules. Jordan Mayer and Aaron Skinner lost No. 1 doubles, Adam Krull and Alvaro Hobbs dropped the No. 2 match, and Mayer and Charlie Curtis were edged 8-6 on the No. 3 line. Jordan Mayer came up short in No. 2 singles, losing 10-8 in the third set. Curtis also lost a tight three-setter at No. 4 singles. Krull lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles, as did Skinner in the No. 3 pairing, and Kevin Lee at No. 6.
