Trinity Leads After Day One of SCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - With wins in both the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay, the Trinity University men opened a 116-94 lead over Southwestern University after the first day of the 2020 SCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship. Official Website | Wednesday's Complete Results | Photo Gallery | Video Interviews Playlist

The Tiger men missed tying the SCAC championship meet record by less than a second when the quartet of Matt Lanzara, Spencer Steward, Ben Adams, and Shamzi Alkaff touched the wall with a time of 1:32.82. Trinity claimed its first win in the event since 2018. The Pirates followed closely behind in second when Southwestern finished just 0.36 seconds behind with a time of 1:33.18. The second place finish was just the second time since 2015 that Southwestern did not win the event. Rounding out the top three was Colorado College who finished in 1:35.96.

Trinity's Beau Tipton, Daniel Sarman, Eric Grace, and Grayden Nelson set a John Davis Pool record by winning the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:48.46. It marked the fourth-fastest time in meet history and was the fifth time since 2014 that the Tigers took top honors in the event. Colorado College finished in second at 6:52.77 while third place went to Southwestern when the Pirates touched the wall in 6:58.32.
