
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Four of the six Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's swimming & diving teams competed this weekend.
Colorado College
Crane Sarris continued his
excellent swimming on the final day of the three-day Colorado
College Classic Sunday at Schlessman Natatorium. With an individual
victory and two relay wins, Sarris helped the CC men's team claim
third place at the meet with 617 points, finishing behind the
University of Colorado club team (689) and Adams State
(623). The sophomore from Adelaine, Australia,
captured the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.28.
Senior Sam Zuke placed third in
the event in 22.50 while fellow senior Brian
Kopec won the consolation race in
23.20. Sarris, who won three races on Saturday,
then led off the final two winning relays of the meet for the
Tigers. He was joined by Kopec, freshman Trey
Watmore and Zuke to win the 800-yard freestyle
relay in a time of 7:40.81, then combined with seniors Christopher
Garrity and Erik Laitos and Zuke
to claim a come-from-behind victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay
in 1:29:41. The CC divers will compete at the Air
Force Diving Invitational, Jan. 30-31, before the entire team
travels to Rockwall, Texas for the SCAC Championships beginning
Feb. 11
McMurry University
The Warhawks competed at the Colorado College Classic
this weekend, finishing in fourth place. In the men's
100-yard butterfly, frosh Vince
Crosby brought home top honors in a clocking of
54.39 seconds. Crosby was also eighth in the 200 individual medley
and swam a leg on the men's 200 free relay, that was fourth, and on
the 200 medley relay that placed second (losing by less than one
second). Kamron Salinas also swam
on the men's 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays, as well as the
400 freestyle relay (also fourth place). Additionally, Salinas was
second in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.29), third in the 200
individual medley (2:08.87) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke
(2:24.32). David Bowers –
the lead swimmer on all three relays – earned a third in the
men's 100 backstroke (58.39) and seventh in the 200
backstroke. Kent Grimes was fifth
in the 100 back (58.58) and third in the 200 back (2:10.32), while
also swimming anchor on all three relay
placewiners. Craig Bell was McM's
top finisher in the 200 butterfly at 2:13.79, good for fifth, with
teammate Christian Chavez in
eighth. Bell was also seventh in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the
200 IM, while Chavez grabbed a fourth in the 400 IM
(5:18.43). The Warhawks will host Southwestern
University and UT-Permian Basin in a double dual meet on Friday,
Jan. 23 (5 p.m.) at the Phillips Family Center.
Southwestern University
In their final home meet of the season, the
Southwestern men defeated Trinity 179.50-119.50. The
Southwestern men posted 11 first place finishes and six second
place on their way to the win. Dillon
Glass posted an SU record in 1-meter diving with a score of
178.60. Julian Smith and Mickey
Scharbrough both captured two first place finishes. Smith in
the 100 back (53.72) and 200 back (1:55.62) and Scharbrough in the
100 (1:00.80) and 200 (2:17.00) breast. The men's 200 medley relay
opened the meet with a big first place finish in 1:38.48. Evan
Jones snagged first in the 200 fly (1:59.38), as did Alex
Villareal in the 200 IM (2:02.13) and Matt Sluss in the
100 fly (53.64). Villareal also finished second in the 100 back
(54.56). Simmon Belaineh and Zach Kline teamed up for a
one-two finish in the 50 free with Belaineh posting a time of 21.91
and Kline finished in 22.20. Simon Gersib finished in
second in the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:02.97 and
2:19.96. Michael Glover and Ty Lapinski also
had a one-two finish in the 500 free with times of 4:59.58 and
5:00.72. Brandon Baccam won the 3 meter diving with a
score of 175.70. Southwestern has one more meet before
competing in the SCAC Championships. They will face McMurry
University on January 23rd in Abilene beginning
at 5 pm.
Trinity University
The Trinity men’s swimming & diving dropped a
duel meet to Southwestern this past weekend. Andrew Thiesse was a
double-winner in the meet, scoring victories in the 200 freestyle
(1:46.30) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:33.73). Defending NCAA
Division III champion Stephen Culberson won his signature event,
the 100 freestyle, with a time of 47.80 seconds. The Tiger team of
Thiesse, Culberson, Adam Thomas, and Isaac Johnson combined to win
the 400 freestyle relay at 3:13.66. In his first action of the
season, Trinity's Nicholas Van Bemmelen placed second in both the
men’s 1-meter and 3-meter diving. Van Bemmelen scored 163.85
points on the 1-meter board, and 158.75 on the 3-meter.
Trinity’s teams head to Chicago Saturday, January 24, for a
double-dual meet with the University of Chicago and DePauw
University.
