Men's Swimming & Diving Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga – Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s swimming & diving teams competed this past weekend. 

Centenary College
The Centenary swimming teams competed in the 47th annual Hendrix Classic on Saturday afternoon with the Gents finishing second in the Classic with 258 points. Juan Tapia and Beau Montgomery helped lead the charge for the Maroon and White on the men’s side. Tapia picked up a second place finish in the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.20 and later logged a time of 2:23.34 in the 200-yard breaststroke to finish fourth in the event. Montgomery also logged a second place finish in the pool with a time of 22.57 in the 50-yard freestyle. The duo made up half of the 400-yard medley relay squad, along with Cameron Brandao and Zack Harrison, which posted a time of 3:50.92 to finish third. Harrison also finished fourth in the 50-yard free with a time of 22.83 and fifth in the 100-yard free with a 49.90. Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8 as they host Hendrix College. The dual meet is slated for 1 p.m.

McMurry University
The McMurry men's swimming team had a good weekend at the Wayland Baptist Invitational and Relays – two separate events held on Friday and Saturday, respectively – at the Pete Regus Aquatics Center. In Friday's men's results, Kamron Salainas managed a third place in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking a time of 2:04.76 minutes. Newcomer Vincent Crosby (2:12.23) and veteran Craig Bell (2:14.01) went 4-5 in the 200 butterfly. In the men's 200 backstroke, Kent Grimes and David Bowers placed Nos. 2 and 4, respectively. Grimes touched at 2:07.35 and Bowers at 2:13.56. On Saturday, the 300 butterfly team – Bell, Crosby and Salinas – won the race by more than two full seconds over Adams State, with a 2:47.98. McMurry was also the runner-up in the 300 backstroke relay with Bowers, David King, and Grimes combining for a time of 2:59.22. The War Hawks will compete against Texas-Permian Basin and St. Gregory in Abilene, Texas on November 14th.

Southwestern University
Southwestern played host to Wayland Baptist on Saturday to open their 2014-15 swimming and diving season. as the men cruised to a 183-84 victory to open the 2014-15 season. Julian Smith wasted no time getting his name on the record board with an SU record times of 53.25 in the 100 back and 1:56.57 in the 200 back, earning first place in the events. Alex Villarreal wasn't far behind in the 100 back, earning second place with an impressive time of 54.49. Matt Sluss took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.65 and Shelby Hall in the 500 free in 5:03.03. It was a one-two finish for Southwestern in the 50 free. Lucas Kahn took first in 22.05 and just narrowly out-touched Simmon Belaineh who finished in 22.22. Belaineh got his first place finish, however, in the 100 free, finishing in 49.17 while Kahn came in second in 49.85.  Julian Smith finished in 2:00.51 and in first in the 200 IM while Ty Lapiniski posted a second place finish with a time of 1:50.19 in the 200 free. The 200 free relay of Kahn, Belaineh, Sluss and Kline snagged first place in a time of 1:28.21. Southwestern remains at home to face Austin College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
