NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Continuing the theme from the Thursday evening finals, records continued to fall at an impressive rate during the Friday evening finals at the 2009 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Swimming & Diving Championships. A total of seven records were set Friday, including NCAA "A" cut times in the women's 100-yard breast and the men's 200-yard freestyle. Official Championship Website
Centre College junior Meredith Angel broke her previous best mark in the women's 100-yard breast by swimming an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:04.20. She set a new SCAC record in the process. Coming into the SCAC Championships, Angel had swum the third-fastest time in the event back at the 2007 conference championships (1:07.38).
On the men's side, DePauw University received a strong showing from junior John Cook. Cook earned an "A" cut time of 1:39.45 and set a new conference record in the men's 200 freestyle. In fact, the top four finishers in the men's 200 freestyle all earned either "A" or "B" cuts.
Other records set included Centre's Angel, Colleen Maggard, Caitlin Rhodes and Lis Starr in the women's 200 medley relay (1:46.17); Centre's Jimmy Tatgenhorst, Brad Erickson, Hunter Owen and Aaron Edwards in the men's 200 medley relay; Rhodes' Starr in the women's 100 fly (56.32); Centre's Maggard in the women's 100 back (58.13); and the DePauw team of Baugh, Cook, Charlie Boehme and Jordan Montgomery in the men's 800 freestyle relay (6:48.21).
The lone diving competition of the night saw Trinity
University's Hayley Emerick finish off the sweep of events as she
claimed top honors on the three-meter board. She broke her own
record from last year's conference championships with a score of
530.40. Following Emerick were Trinity teammates Lindsay Martin,
Lynne Bettinger, Amy Oliver and Kristin Nordstrom in second through
fifth, respectively.
Other individual winners on Friday night included Callie Boehme of
DePauw in the women's 400 IM (4:34.21), Charlie Boehme of DePauw in
the men's 400 IM (4:05.31), Connor Barton of Colorado College in
the men's 100 fly (50.11), Jessie Carrier of Southwestern in the
women's 200 freestyle (1:55.87), Dan DeGeus of DePauw in the 100
breaststroke (57.73) and Drew Wagstaff of Rhodes in the 100
backstroke (52.27).
In the final women's relay of the evening, Centre College (Amber
Lyvens, Trinity Hochstetler, Sadie Allen and Lauren Gates) won the
800 freestyle relay with a finishing time of 7:55.70.
The SCAC Championships wrap up on Saturiday February, 14 starting at 10:30 a.m. Central with preliminary action. Senior recognition is slated to begin at 6:10 p.m. followed by finals action at 6:30 p.m. Central.
