GEORGETOWN, Texas - Dan Carrington has been named as the head men's and women's swimming and diving coach for the Pirates. The announcement was made Friday by Southwestern University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Glada Munt. Carrington comes to Southwestern after serving as the head coach for the San Antonio Wave.

"I'm very excited to bring my passion and leadership to a young team that is ready to be successful" states Carrington.  "My wife and I are looking forward to becoming part of the family at Southwestern University."

"We are delighted to welcome Coach Carrington to our Athletic Department" says Dr. Munt. "He brings a wonderful blend of experience in working with club programs in Texas and with the high academic student-athletes at Duke University. He has a tremendous level of energy and enthusiasm for building our swimming program which will be both challenging and exciting for our swimmers."

In just one year with the San Antonio Wave, Carrington oversaw 150 swimmers and helped two achieve USA Swimming Sectionals time standards and led the team to a top ten finish at the South Texas Championships.

Prior to leading the Wave, Carrington was the assistant swim coach at Duke University in Durham, NC for the 2007-2008 season. He was an integral part of the staff that coached the Blue Devils women and men to a sixth place and seventh place finish respectively at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Carrington also headed the Blue Devil Aquatics program where he helped one swimmer achieve USA Swimming Sectionals time standards and three prepare for the United States Olympic Trials.

"Dan Carrington is a young coach who has a great sense of what collegiate sports are all about and applies that philosophy to his program" states Duke University's Head Swimming and Diving Coach Dan Colella. "We thoroughly enjoyed having him here with us on deck at Duke University and was a key motivator for the team that year.  I know that Southwestern University and the swimming program are going to benefit greatly by having him on staff."

Carrington is a 2002 graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry. Upon graduation he worked in the pharmaceutical industry as an analytical chemist from May 2002 - June 2008. He also coached for two separate high school programs, Delta High School from 2001-2002 and Yorktown High School from 1999-2000, before beginning the Triangle Area Swimming program in the fall of 2005 at the Durham YMCA.

A native of Danville, Ind., Carrington is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA). He is married to Kim Carrington and they have one daughter, Grace.
