Southwestern Upsets Colorado College to Move to Semifinals

- For just the third time in SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament history, a No. 6 seed defeated a No. 3 seed as Southwestern University shocked Colorado College, 1-0, to advance to Saturday's semifinal round. Official Website | Postgame Interview

A first-half goal by junior Alex Newell stood up as the Pirates improved to 6-11-3 and moved to the semifinal round for the first time since 2014.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half was fairly even with Colorado College holding a slight 11-8 shot advantage.
  • In the second half, the ball stayed almost entirely on the Colorado College side of the field. Despite holding a 14-1 shot advantage, however, the Tigers could not find the net.

NOTABLES

  • This marked just the third time in SCAC men's soccer history that a six seed has defeated a three seed. The first time it happened was in 2011 when sixth-seeded Southwestern once again knocked off third-seeded Colorado College (2-1).
  • The loss snaps Colorado College's three straight appearances in the SCAC title game.
  • Southwestern is 4-1 lifetime against Colorado College in the SCAC men's soccer tournament.
  • Colorado College (11-4-5), which was the No. 2 ranked team in the last NCAA West Region poll, will now have to await word of an at-large bid with then brackeet is released on Monday.

Southwestern (6-11-3) moves on to take on the host school, University of Dallas, Saturday at 1:30 pm CT. Dallas swept the regular season series against Southwestern, winning both contest by identical 2-1 scores.
