Men's Soccer Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Both of the SCAC's nationally ranked teams, Colorado College and Trinity University, extended their winning streaks. The Colorado Tigers ran their streak to four straight wins while the Texas Tigers extended their streak to seven straight wins.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College (6-5-2, 2-3 SCAC) went 0-2 last week, falling 4-1 to No. 25 Colorado College on Friday before losing at Dallas, 2-1 on Sunday. The Kangaroos return to action on Oct. 12th and 14th when they travel to #1 Trinity and Southwestern, respectively.

Centenary
dropped both of the week’s contests against Dallas (4-2) Oct. 5 and Colorado College (2-0) Oct. 7, both on the road. The losses moved the Gents to 2-9 and 0-5 in SCAC play, extending their losing streak to six matches. Brandon Heim and Spencer Nickerson accounted for the two goals against Dallas. The Gents are in the middle of the four-game road trip, which continues Oct. 12 at Southwestern and wraps up Oct. 14 at Trinity before hosting Austin College Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. That begins a stretch of five straight home games to end the season before the SCAC Tournament.

Senior Matt Fechter and No. 24 Colorado College had a night to remember in their first game on the new turf at Washburn Field. Fechter struck for the third hat trick of his career to propel the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Austin College. The All-America forward put the Tigers on the board 12:02 into the game when he buried a cross from junior midfielder Sean Parham. A little more than six minutes later, Fechter scored on a nearly identical play set up by senior forward Daniel Wright. Sophomore midfielder Alec Martinez made it 3-0 when he scored his first career goal with six minutes remaining in the first half, using his body to re-direct junior midfielder Andrew Salazar’s cross from the left corner. Fechter completed his sixth career multiple-goal contest in the 53rd minute when he buried senior defender Kyle Buchwalder’s cross from the right corner. Senior Forrest Marowitz improved to 6-0-0 in goal, making three saves before giving way to freshman Ian Horne with 16:33 remaining in the second half. Sophomore defender Alec Sowers recorded a goal and an assist to help Colorado College defeat Centenary, 2-0, on Sunday. Sowers set up a tally by Fechter 5:21 into the second half and then struck for the first goal of his collegiate career with a little less than 14 minutes remaining to seal the victory. Fechter's tally was his fourth game winner of the season and the 12th of his career. He also has four game-winning assists. Fechter established a personal single-season high with his 12th goal and tied his personal best of 33 points set last year. CC launched a total of 21 shots, while allowing only four for the second time this season. The shutout was the seventh of the season for the Tigers, who have blanked five of eight opponents at Stewart Field. Colorado College travels to Irving, Texas, next week to face UC Santa Cruz on Saturday and the University of Dallas on Sunday.

Dallas
(5-5, 2-3 SCAC) went 2-0 on the week in a pair of SCAC home contests. Friday brought Centenary College of Louisiana to Irving, Texas. After Centenary opened the game with a 2-0 advantage, the Crusaders responded with four unanswered goals en route to a 4-2 victory. Dallas battled Austin College in a tightly-contested affair Sunday afternoon at Crusader Field. The 'Roos scored at the three-minute mark to claim the early lead. Matt Wise would not have what Austin College was dishing, however, as the sophomore midfielder countered with two goals to lead Dallas to a 2-1 triumph. This week, Dallas will take on Colorado College (Saturday) and UC-Santa Cruz (Sunday).

A packed house crammed the hill for Saturday's Southwestern game against  #1 Trinity and despite a 2-0 loss the fans got a great show from the Pirates. The Pirates may have been out-shot 22-6 but got the most of the looks they did have as they were right on the verge of scoring numerous times, but couldn't get fate to fall their way as the shots veered out of goal. Southwestern currently sits at 8-7 on the season, 2-4 in the SCAC. They remain in conference action as they host Centenary College on Friday night and Austin College on Sunday afternoon.

No. 1 Trinity went 2-0 over the past week, taking a 2-0 SCAC road win at Southwestern on Saturday, then finishing with a 3-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday night. The Tigers had four different players score the five goals over the weekend, and the defense picked up its seventh and eighth shutouts of the season. Trinity will continue SCAC play this weekend, facing off against Austin College and Centenary on Friday and Sunday. The Tigers beat Centenary 3-0 and Austin 5-1 on the road just two weeks ago.
