LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity University extended its winning streak to nine games with two more Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference wins over Austin College and Centenary. With the wins, the Tigers are now 14-0-1 and 7-0-0 in SCAC play.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College (6-7-2, 2-5 SCAC) went 0-2 last
week, falling 6-2 to No. 1 Trinity on Friday before losing at
Southwestern, 2-0 on Sunday. Against Trinity, goalie Andrew Celio
made 10 saves. Celio then added six more against Southwestern. The
Kangaroos return to action on Oct. 20th when they travel to
Centenary College.
Centenary (2-11, 0-7) lost both matches this weekend.
Southwestern handed Centenary its seventh straight loss, 6-0,
before No. 1 Trinity shut out the Gents for the second time this
year, 7-0, for the Gents eighth straight loss and third consecutive
shutout. Centenary finished its four-match road trip and begins a
five-game home stand Oct. 20 against Austin College at 3 p.m. to
finish the regular season before the SCAC Tournament.
Daniel Wright scored the only goal No. 22 Colorado
College would need 4:01 into the contest and the defense
recorded its eighth shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over UC
Santa Cruz in a neutral-site contest on Friday. Wright's goal,
which was set up by Matt Fechter, proved to be his fourth game
winner of the season and the seventh of his career. The senior
forwards have combined on scores five times during the last eight
contests. Fechter struck for his conference-leading 13th goal of
the season in the 29th minute, then set up a tally by senior
defender Nick Lammers 46 seconds into the second half. Fechter
matched his single-season record with 11 assists set last year. He
now has double-digit goals and assists for the second year in a
row, which marks only the 13th time in SCAC a player has
accomplished that feat. Playing on back-to-back days for only the
second time this season, Colorado College saw its five-game winning
streak come to an end with 0-0 tie at Dallas on Saturday. It was
the team's first scoreless tie since Sept. 5, 2011 against the
University of Minnesota Morris at Stewart Field. Despite dominating
play in terms of possession, the Tigers were kept off the
scoreboard for only the third time this season. CC launched a total
of 25 shots, while UD managed only seven. Marowitz, who made his
only save in the second period, improved to 8-0-1 while posting his
third shutout of the season and the sixth of his career. Colorado
College plays host to Trinity next Friday and Southwestern on
Sunday in the final home games of the 2012 campaign.
Dallas (5-5-2, 2-3-1 SCAC) tied two home matches on the
week. On Saturday, Dallas hosted Colorado College. With neither
team able to get on track offensively, a 0-0 20T draw resulted.
Sunday in Irving, Texas, pitted the Crusaders versus UC Santa Cruz.
Coach Hoffmann's squad surrendered a goal just 44 seconds into the
game to the Banana Slugs. A strong defensive effort kept Dallas in
the game, and sophomore midfielder Matt Wise's 80th minute
penalty-kick helped salvage a 1-1 tie. The squad will close out
their home schedule this week, battling Southwestern University
(Friday) and Trinity University (Sunday).
Southwestern won two important games this weekend at
home, defeating Centenary and Austin College to move to 10-6 on the
season and 4-3 in the SCAC. Southwestern's unselfish play paid off
in spades as the Pirates defeated Centenary College on Friday
evening 6-0. Evan Perkins paced the scoring with a first half hat
trick. Steven Resnik assisted on two of the goals in the win. On
Sunday, five seniors celebrated their final home game with a 2-0
win over Austin College. After a scoreless first half the Pirates
benefited from a foul in the box and put away the penalty kick to
go up 1-0. They continued to press and added another goal in the
90th minute to seal the 2-0 win. Ryan Staten recorded both goals
for Southwestern. SU heads to Irving, Texas on Friday to face the
University of Dallas and then travels to take on Colorado College
on Sunday.
No. 1 Trinity earned a pair of SCAC home wins
over the weekend, defeating both Austin College and Centenary
College for the second time this season. The Tigers opened with a
6-2 win over Austin College, which snapped a scoreless streak of
687 minutes by goalkeeper Matt Cardone, but earned a regular season
sweep for Trinity. On Sunday, Trinity finished the weekend with a
7-0 shutout of Centenary. Yuri Ribeiro and Victor Araujo scored two
goals each against Centenary, and Ribeiro also had two goals in the
Austin game on Friday. Alan Castillejos also had two goals against
Austin, as well as another score late in Sunday’s game.
Johnny Lawson had a goal in each win for the Tigers. Trinity will
travel to Colorado College and the University of Dallas this
weekend, playing its final regular season road games in conference
play. Friday’s game against Colorado will be a showdown
between the top two teams in the SCAC standings. The Tigers beat
both teams in San Antonio earlier this season.
