SUWANEE, Ga. - Conference play opened up this weekend and it was Trinity who picked up two wins on the road against Austin College and in overtime against Colorado College. The TU Tiger's have now extended it's conference unbeaten streak to 29 games. Conference play continues this weekend with eight teams in SCAC action.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College
dropped a pair of tough games over the weekend, falling 3-0 to
Trinity and 2-1 against Southwestern to fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2
in conference play. Against Trinity, the ‘Roos surrendered a
pair of goals in a four minute span midway through the first half
and never recovered, ultimately falling 3-0 after the Tigers scored
again with 24 seconds remaining in the match. Grant Gosselin made
five saves in the net for the ‘Roos. Against Southwestern,
the ‘Roos fell behind 1-0 in the first half when a corner
kick deflected off of a Pirates player and into the net, but Austin
College came out on the attack in the second half and got the
equalizer on a header from Sam Temple in the 57th minute. However,
the momentum shifted back in Southwestern’s favor 15 minutes
later when the Pirates scored what would prove to be the game
winner. The ‘Roos step out of conference to face Texas
Lutheran this Sunday in their only match of the week.
Birmingham-Southern split two games this weekend
in St. Louis. First, BSC travelled to Washington University on
Friday and fell to the Bears 2-1 before heading over to Fontbonne
on Sunday. The game with the Griffins went better, with the
Panthers getting the 3-0 shutout to close the week. Tony Crocker
scored the Panthers’ lone goal on Friday, but the stiff Bear
defense was too much to overcome. Tyler Evans had a hand in two of
BSC’s three on Sunday, scoring the game-winning first goal
and assisting in the third. The Panthers will open SCAC play this
weekend as they host Rhodes on Friday before seeing Hendrix on
Sunday. Game times are 6:00 p.m. on Friday and noon on Sunday.
Centre continued on its impressive undefeated run
with a 2-0-1 record this week, making it 6 games in a row without a
loss for the Colonels. On Tuesday night, Centre faced off against a
determined Hanover College side, scoring two late goals for a 2-0
victory, outshooting the Panthers 25-6 on the night. Centre then
headed to Bloomington, IL for two tough matches on the road. On
Friday night, Centre and the University of Chicago battled hard for
110 minutes, with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. Then, on Saturday
night, Centre beat Illinois Wesleyan University 2-1 in another
tough road match. The Colonels, 6-2-1, begin SCAC Conference play
this weekend with road matches at Oglethorpe University and
Sewanee, the University of the South.
Senior midfielder Trevor Cobb scored on a direct kick in the 30th
minute to lift Colorado College to a 2-1 victory
over Southwestern University in the conference opener for both
teams on Friday night at Washburn Field. It was Cobb’s eighth
game-winning goal of his career. He also has six game-winning
assists. Freshman forward Matt Fechter gave the Tigers a brief 1-0
lead when he tallied his first collegiate goal off a Jordan Reese
corner kick 21:51 into the game. Brian Engle stopped three shots to
earn the victory in goal. On Sunday, CC dropped a 1-0 decision to
Trinity for the second year in a row. Engle made seven saves, a
career high in an SCAC game, to give the Tigers an opportunity to
get the victory. Engle still has never allowed more than one goal
in a conference game. Colorado College will play host to the annual
Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament this weekend and play
non-conference matches against Milwaukee School of Engineering and
the University of Dallas on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Head
Coach Horst Richardson needs just two victories to reach 500 for
his career, all of which will be as head coach at CC.
No. 23 DePauw suffered the first blemishes on its
2009 record during the week as it battled to a 2-2 tie at Wabash on
Wednesday and lost by a 1-0 count in Saturday's contest at
third-ranked Ohio Wesleyan. The Tigers trailed the Little Giants
with less than 12 minutes left before Beau Sorg's free kick cut the
lead in half. Sorg then struck another free kick which Jent
Botterman headed to Brian Lawless who knocked in the game-tying
goal with 21 seconds remaining in regulation. The tie was just the
second in 47 meetings between the two schools with the first coming
last year. Ohio Wesleyan scored on a penalty kick at 64:27 for the
game's lone goal.
Hendrix finished the week at 1-1 after opening
SCAC play with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Rhodes College on
Friday night and a 3-4 loss to visiting Coe College on Sunday
afternoon. The Warriors now stand at 4-3 overall and 1-0 in
conference action and will look to add a pair of road wins when
they travel to Millsaps College on Sept. 25 and then to
Birmingham-Southern College on Sept. 27. Senior defender Kent
Coombs scored the Warriors’ golden goal against Rhodes with
four minutes remaining in the second overtime to snap a six-game
losing streak against the Lynx. Sophomore forward Duncan Keegan
sent a cross from the right end line past senior forward Thatcher
Crawford and Coombs was there to hammer in the game-winner, his
first career goal. Keegan came out of the gate hot and gave the
Warriors an early 2-0 advantage with goals in the first and 26th
minutes. Sophomore forward Jonathan Birdwell assisted Keegan for
his first goal, while sophomore midfielder Colin Thompson took a
shot from about 30 yards out and Keegan was there to clean up the
rebound for his fifth goal of the season. Rhodes knotted the game
at 2-2 with a pair of unanswered goals in the second half. Coe
College used a pair of goals from Tom Wakeland and Jacob Johnson to
outlast the Warriors on Sunday. Hendrix first year Dylan Reed
scored the first goal of the game, and the first of his career,
before Wakeland scored two unanswered goals. Warriors sophomore
defender Ian Evans knotted the game at 2-2, and then Johnson put
two balls past the keeper to round out the Kohawks scoring. Coombs
scored off a rebound with just 2:55 remaining, but it was too
little, too late as Coe College took the thrilling win.
Millsaps got a late
goal from senior Corey Beaumont to grab a 2-1 win on the road at
Huntingdon College Saturday to improve to 5-2 overall. The road win
was the Majors fourth consecutive – the first time that has
happened since the mid-1980’s – as they improved to 3-0
on the road this year. Senior Aaron Hyatt got his 17th career goal
(7th all-time) and Beaumont added his second career game-winner as
the Majors tied a school-record start through seven games (1982,
1986). The Majors will open SCAC play this weekend in Jackson at
Harper Davis Field, welcoming Hendrix and Rhodes College to town on
Friday and Sunday. Both matches will be streamed live on
www.gomajors.com.
Oglethorpe lost their only match of the week at
Reinhardt College, 2-1. Playing in a steady downpour, the Eagles
were able to get the game-winning goal with only 10 minutes
remaining in the contest for the victory. Jon Beaver got the start
in goal for Oglethorpe over an injured Michael Hadjisimos and
stopped 8 of 10 shots on goal. The Petrels scored their lone goal
late in the first half when Ben Robertson fed E.J. Ovie-Ogodo who
put it in the right corner past the Eagles keeper. The Petrels
begin conference play this weekend when they square off with Centre
on Friday on Salamone Field at 2:00 p.m.
Rhodes suffered a tough loss in the second
overtime against Hendrix on Friday night. After a sluggish first
half, the team played well, and worked hard to come back from a 2-0
deficit, with goals from Sophomore defender Michael Pappas and
Senior midfielder Allen Orgeron. The Lynx fought hard into overtime
but couldn't come up with the win. With 4 minutes left in the
second overtime, Hendrix was able to slip one past Junior keeper
Justin Stradley for the sudden-death victory. Saturday's game,
however, had a much better turnout. The Lynx battled hard and
defeated Coe College with a 2-0 victory on a wet and muddy home
field. The first goal was scored by Senior Logan Eberly on a ball
played from out wide by Freshman Ben Owens. Less than fifteen
minutes later, Ben Owens found himself on the scoresheet again when
he received a ball on the far side of the goal from Freshman Petar
Radujkovic. Justin Stradley played all 196 minutes in goal this
weekend. Rhodes will host Christian Brothers University Wednesday,
Sept. 25 at 5 pm.
Sewanee went 2-0 this weekend with shutouts of
DIII foes LaGrange and Huntingdon. On Friday, Matt O'Brien scored a
header to net the game-winner, which was followed by an own goal
for the 2-0 Sewanee win. On Sunday, O'Brien scored the winner at
Huntingdon off of a corner kick for the 1-0 Tiger victory. The
Tigers are 4-2 and will host DePauw and Centre in SCAC play this
weekend.
Southwestern opened up conference action this
week with two games, one at Colorado College and one at Austin
College. Friday night saw all goals scored in the first half and
within eight minutes of each other as Southwestern fell 2-1. SU
rebounded from the loss to defeat Austin College 2-1 on Sunday and
improve to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in SCAC action. Josh Spencer
led the way for SU on the weekend with three points, recording an
assist against Colorado College and scoring the game winning goal
at Austin College. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Pierce had 10 saves
over the weekend. The regionally-ranked Pirates will head to San
Antonio, Texas for a non-conference match-up with Rowan University
on Friday, September 25th.
No. 12 Trinity opened up SCAC play on the road
this past weekend, earning a pair of wins to take the early lead in
the SCAC standings. Trinity opened the weekend with a 3-0 win at
Austin College, with Ben Grossman scoring two first-half goals and
assisting on the final score. On Sunday, Trinity and Colorado
College were locked in a scoreless tie that was reminiscent of last
year’s game in San Antonio. Trinity scored in the 89th minute
to earn the win last season. This time, there would be no late goal
to break the tie, though, and the game eventually went into double
overtime without a score. With just under five minutes remaining in
the game, Tommy Barros was able to find the back of the net for his
second game-winner of the year, though, with Grossman picking up
another assist. This week, Trinity returns home for the first time
since the season opener, taking on Rowan University on Saturday
night. The Tigers will also face the University of Incarnate Word
at home on Monday night.
