JACKSON, Miss. - In an intense and
exciting soccer match at Harper Davis Field on Sunday afternoon
where both teams brought everything to the turf, Millsaps senior
Anthony Amaya made good on both penalty kick opportunities,
including the game-winner in overtime just 17 seconds in, as the
Majors snapped a
10-match losing streak to Centre in a 2-1 win.
In a match that featured questionable calls, 32 combined fouls,
three cards, an ejection and a postgame scuffle, it was all you
could ask for in a downright dogfight for a spot among the elite in
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Centre (9-3, 2-1 SCAC) entered Sunday's match as one of three
unbeaten in conference alongside Trinity and DePauw and ranked No.
16 by the NSCAA, but dropped three spots to a tie-fifth in the
standings after its third, 1-goal loss.
Millsaps (6-7, 2-2 SCAC) got the close losses off its back for one
game and felt a sense of revenge after a tough, 1-0 loss to DePauw
in the 85th minute two nights earlier, using Amaya's goals to snap
a streak of five, 1-goal defeats this season alone.
Set up by a foul drawn by the Majors' Andres Colocho, Amaya
(pictured) gave Millsaps a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute
when he beat Centre keeper Aaron Arndt to the lower left
corner.
The Majors would hold the lead the ensuing 34 minutes until Adam
Boyer snuck in the game-tying goal in the 77th minute for the
Colonels off a Richard Hiton assist. In an odd situation, Centre
was awarded a free kick from just three yards outside the Majors'
net where Hiton set the ball down quickly and delivered it to Boyer
to eventually force OT.
In the extra frame, another penalty kick drawn by Millsaps just 17
seconds in set up the game-winning opportunity for Amaya. With the
keeper thinking left corner again, Amaya drilled the shot into the
back right corner of the net for the score as the Majors' bench
stormed the field in excitement after the thrilling win.
Freshman GK Ian McDougall, who replaced Dylan Broussard in the 83rd
minute, picked up his first collegiate win to move to 1-1 on the
year while Arndt fell to 9-3.
