SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Amherst (Mass.) College Lord Jeffs upset the top-ranked Trinity University Tigers 1-0 Sunday in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer quarterfinals at Swarthmore College. Box Score
Amherst forward Jake Duker broke a 0-0 deadlock with a goal - a
one-touch cross in front of the net - in the 87th minute of the
game. Forward Jay Heo had the assist.
The Lord Jeffs (15-3-3) advanced to the NCAA semifinals, to be
played Dec. 5 at Greensboro, N.C. The Tigers, who lost their first
game of the season, completed the campaign with a 20-1-1
record.
The Tigers, led by head coach Paul McGinlay, played in their fifth
quarterfinal-game in the past seven years, and seventh overall.
Trinity captured the NCAA title in 2003 and advanced to last
year’s championship game. Middlebury (Vt.) beat the Tigers in
penalty kicks, in an overtime contest.
The Tigers competed in their 12th NCAA tournament in the past 13
years.
Trinity led Sunday’s game in overall shots 14-9, and held a
4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Amherst led 7-3 in corner
kicks.
Amherst goalkeeper Lennard Kovacs registered four saves in the
game. Tiger junior goalkeeper Patrick Johnson of Houston (Memorial)
had one save.
Tiger senior midfielder Tyrone Petrakis of Albuquerque, N.M.
(Sandia Prep), took four shots, and two on goal, including a
penalty kick. Sophomore forward Cameron Hogsett of McKinney, Texas
(McKinney), had three shots, with two on goal.
