Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2014 Men's Lacrosse season is underway and got off with a bang as Southwestern University is 2-0 on the season, blowing out Hendrix and coming from behind to defeat Rhodes. Colorado College also got off to a good start, earning a split in their first weekend including a 16-4 beatdown of Birmingham-Southern.

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Centenary was idle this past weekend as they open up their seasn this upcoming weekend. The Gents will take on Hendrix on Saturday to open up the year before returning home on Sunday to host Millsaps.

Colorado College began the 2014 season by splitting a pair of games on the road. The Tigers stormed back from an early 2-0 deficit and cruised to a 16-4 victory at their on Friday afternoon. The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead on a pair of man-up goals just 1:27 apart after CC was given a three-minute non-releasable penalty for illegal equipment. Despite playing a man down for seven of the game’s first 15 minutes, Colorado College began its comeback when Sayre Thomas struck for a shorthanded tally with 6:08 to play in the opening period. The Tigers took the lead on a marker by freshman Stephen Petersilge 40 seconds into the second quarter. They added goals by Jack Kreitler, Petersilge and Michael Idell during a span of four minutes to take a 6-2 lead by halftime. CC broke the game open with seven unanswered goals in the third quarter, the first two coming just five seconds apart by Henri Halle and Chris Lee during the first three minutes. Petersilge paced the Colorado College offense with four goals and an assist, while Austin Davie struck for a pair of tallies. Freshman goalie Ryan Goodall stopped five of seven shots to earn the victory in his collegiate debut. Thomas won 16 of 19 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls. Halle struck for a career-high five goals, but the Tigers ran out of time and dropped a 14-10 decision to Sewanee on Sunday in Memphis. After falling behind 12-3 with 1:51 left in the third quarter, CC scored five straight to pull to within 12-8 with 4:03 to play. The teams traded goals during the final two minutes and Sewanee hung on for its first-ever victory against Colorado College. Chase Murphy made four saves for CC during the first 30 minutes, while Goodall stopped one shot in the second half. Thomas won 17 of 24 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high 11 ground balls. Sewanee converted on three of its five man-up opportunities, while the Tigers went 1-for-2. Colorado College is idle until Feb. 28 when it plays Southwestern University in the 2014 Patriot Cup in Dallas.

Southwestern opened the 2014 season with a pair of home wins, routing Hendrix College 10-3 and defeating Rhodes in a huge comeback 7-6. Against Hendrix the Pirates used a huge second quarter, scoring four goals, and continued to apply the pressure defensively to win easily. A huge second half coupled with tough defense that allowed just one second half goal allowed SU to pull out the win late in the fourth on Austin Fox’s game winner. Southwestern remains at home to face Millsaps College on Friday night.
