SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College scored early and often on their way to another SCAC sweep last weekend. The Tigers topped Millsaps 28-1 and then downed Southwestern 22-2 for the program's first 7-0 start since the 1998 season. All seven of Colorado College's wins have come away from Washburn Field.
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern
played a single game this week, losing to Greensboro College, 15-6,
in a neutral site game played in Greenville, S.C. BSC returns to
conference action this weekend, taking on Southwestern University,
Friday, and Colorado College, Sunday, both on the road.
Centre took part in two conference road games
this week, as they faced Sewanee on Saturday, April 2 and
Oglethorpe on Sunday, April 3. The Colonels fell in their match to
the Tigers by a score of 21-7, but they recovered from the loss on
Sunday by beating the Stormy Petrels 21-8. Centre is currently 2-7
on the season and they are 1-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference. Next up for Centre will be another road conference game
on Friday, April 8 against Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. at 7
p.m.
Playing on April 1 for the first time since 1998, Moses Taylor and
Colorado College didn’t
fool around during their 28-1 victory at Millsaps. Taylor recorded
career highs of seven goals and 11 points to help CC post a school
record for points in a single game and tie the program’s mark
for the largest margin of victory set during last year’s 27-0
victory over Southwestern. Carson Christman added five goals and
five assists to set a personal single-game record with 10 points.
Twelve players scored for the Tigers, including Michael Idell and
Jake Satchwell who each struck for their first two career goals
during the second half. Buck McKenna 12 of 14 draws against the
Majors and grabbed a career-high 14 ground balls. Colorado College
improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1998 by cruising to a 22-2
victory over Southwestern the following day. Playing their second
game in less than 24 hours, the Tigers eclipsed the 20-goal mark
for the third time in four games. They also held their opponent to
five goals or less for the fifth contest on a row and the sixth
time this season. Colorado College plays at home for the first time
in 2011 when Oglethorpe visits Washburn Field on Friday, and then
the Tigers square off with Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
Hendrix junior Ben Nelson scored a season-high
five goals and five assists, while the Warriors held Millsaps
College scoreless in the first half to earn a 19-1 victory on
Friday afternoon at Warrior Field. Hendrix (4-4, 2-1 SCAC)
dominated from the start and never looked back as the Warriors took
a 9-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Sophomore David
Davis, Jr. led Hendrix with three goals in the first half, while
Nelson picked up three of his assists in the first two quarters.
Senior Clayton Cersonsky and junior Sam Brisson both sent two shots
past the keeper in the last 15 minutes to reach the final mark.
Millsaps continues to search for the
program’s first win after losing two at home this week to
Colorado College and Southwestern. Colorado scored 12 goals in the
first quarter on Friday to overwhelm the Majors by a final of 28-1.
Hunter Stevison had the Majors’ lone goal, man-up, with 3:50
remaining in the first half. Sunday’s game with Southwestern
was much closer. The Pirates scored two in the first, but the
Majors got one back with 1:26 in the half to pull back to within
one thanks to Brandon Allison’s second goal of the season.
Unfortunately, Southwestern scored again with 38 seconds to play in
the half to maintain their two-goal advantage at the break. The
game got away from the Majors in the second half as Southwestern
netted 13 second half goals to come away with the 16-1 win. The
Majors will host Centre and Sewanee this weekend at Harper Davis
Field. The Colonels will come in for a 7 p.m. game on Friday before
the Tigers help the Majors close out the regular season at 1 p.m.
on Sunday.
Oglethorpe went 0-2 on the weekend, losing to
Sewanee on Friday (L, 19-0) and to Centre (L, 21-8) on Sunday. The
Tigers dominated possession and out-shot the Petrels 58-8 to secure
the convincing 19-0 win. Sewanee raced to a 5-0 advantage following
the first quarter and extended the lead to an insurmountable 13-0
cushion by halftime. In a battle of two first-year lacrosse
programs, Centre topped Oglethorpe on Sunday afternoon at Salamone
Field, 21-8. The Colonels jumped out to an 11-2 advantage at
halftime and held off a Petrels rally in the second stanza for the
victory. Oglethorpe is now 2-6 on the season and will face Berry
College on Wednesday before facing the daunting task of squaring
off with lacrosse stalwart Colorado College in Colorado Springs
this coming Friday.
Sewanee picked up a pair of SCAC wins this
weekend to push their overall record to 4-6 and their conference
record to 3-1. The Tigers toppled Oglethorpe 19-0 on Friday before
taking home a 21-7 win over Centre on Saturday. Against the Stormy
Petrels, Sewanee used a 58-8 shot advantage to build a 13-0
halftime lead. The Tigers didn’t let up and behind Tommy
Healy’s five-save shutout, were able to take home a
commanding 19-0 win. Jack Thomasson led Sewanee with five goals on
seven shots, while Healy added six groundballs in 60 minutes of
work. Against the Colonels, Sewanee found themselves trailing 4-1
after the first quarter, but used a nine-goal outburst in the
second to take a 10-1 lead into the break. The Tigers added 11 more
goals in the second half to earn a 21-7 victory. Thomasson poured
in seven goals on 10 shots, while Teddy Peterson was 20-of-31 on
face-offs in the game. Sewanee out-shot the Colonels, 67-23, on the
day. The Tigers are back in action April 8, traveling to Hendrix
for an SCAC match up at 7 p.m.
Southwestern is entrenched in conference action
and continues to battle for the final spot in the first ever SCAC
tournament. SU went 1-1 this week and are 5-7 overall, 2-2 in the
SCAC and a half game back from Hendrix for the final playoff spot.
Colorado College was first on the agenda for Southwestern in
Jackson, Miss. The Tigers came out strong and the seasoned team was
just too much for the Pirates to handle as they fell 22-2. The
Pirates rebounded well and opened up Sunday's game tentatively,
taking a 3-1 lead into halftime. With a strong defensive core
handling the Majors it allowed SU's offense to post a more
aggressive attack that resulted in 13 second half goals for the
16-1 win. Sophomore Edward Williams set a new SU record with five
goals in the game. The Pirates return home to face
Birmingham-Southern on Friday at 4pm and Oglethorpe on Sunday at 1
p.m.
