SUWANEE, Ga. - Six of the eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's lacrosse teams opened up their 2011 season over the past two weeks. Headlining the first couple weeks was Oglethorpe winning the program's first-ever game played and Hendrix earning its program's first-ever win as well.

Birmingham-Southern
opened its season at home on Sunday, losing a tough one to Saint
Vincent College, 18-13. Sophomore Nicco DeRosa led the team with
five of its goals. The Panthers are back in action this weekend,
taking on No. 5 Roanoke College on Sunday in Atlanta.
Centre opens up its inaugural season on March 5th
when the Colonels host Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
opponent Hanover (Ind.). Centre is one of three new schools in the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference fielding a
men’s lacrosse team in 2011.
Colorado College opens the 2011
regular season with back-to-back games against Goucher College and
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania on March 12 and 13. The Tigers
are coming off a 2010 season in which they went 10-2 and 4-0 in the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. With a perfect 4-0 mark in
league play, the Tigers won the inaugural SCAC men’s lacrosse
championship.
Hendrix saw its 36-game losing streak come to a
halt on Friday evening in front of a packed house at Warrior Field.
The Warriors kicked off a new era in the lacrosse program and
opened the 2011 season with their first NCAA win in school history
after a dominant 18-2 win over University of Dallas. The Warriors
closed their first weekend with a hard-fought loss to Carthage on
Sunday morning. Hendrix used a balanced attack with seven players
combining for the 18-goal effort. Sophomore David Davis, Jr. led
the way with five goals, while seniors Dan Fox and Tim Wojcik
scored three goals apiece. Junior Ben Nelson and senior Don Geders
added two scored apiece. The Warriors outshot the Crusaders, 40-10,
and owned a 42-16 advantage in ground balls. Hendrix was 10-of-13
in clear opportunities.
Millsaps was overtaken by Berry College 19-0 in
their regular season opener last week. The Majors (0-1) were
outshot 57-7 by the Vikings (1-0) on the day. Major goalie Chris
Hood managed to save 12 in his full 60:00. Hunter Stevison had four
shots to lead the Majors, three were on goal - all saved by the
Viking goalie. The Majors will go for the program's first win
against Carthage College in Memphis, Tenn. at Christian Brothers
High School at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Oglethorpe opened up its inaugural men’s
lacrosse schedule with a program first victory with a 9-6 win at
Reinhardt. The Stormy Petrels scored six of their nine goals in the
second half to in expanding on Oglethorpe’s 3-2 halftime
lead. Sophomore attacker Michael Kasmarik etched his name in the
Oglethorpe record books as he scored the first Stormy Petrel goal
in program history with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter.
Kasmarik’s goal tied things at 1-1 before the Petrels
outscored Reinhardts 8-5 for the win. OU is back in action on March
2nd at Shorter before the team’s home opener on March 16
against Carthage.
Sewanee lost its only game of the week on
Saturday, dropping a 6-5 decision in the final seconds to
Wittenberg in a game played at Montgomery Bell Academy in
Nashville. After Wittenberg took an early first-quarter lead,
Sewanee battled back to within one point by the end of the third
quarter. After the Tigers evened the game at 5-5 in the fourth,
Witt scored the final goal of the game with 16 seconds left to take
home the win. After Witt scored three straight goals to open the
contest, Reed Daniel got the Tigers on the board as the first
quarter wound down. Jack Thomasson added a goal as time expired in
the same frame to make it 3-2 Witt heading into the second quarter.
Davis Brown and Daniel added goals for the Tigers in the second and
third quarters Thomasson added a fourth-quarter score for Sewanee,
but it wouldn’t be enough. Spencer Graves was steady in goal
for the Tigers, capturing 13 saves on the day. The loss drops
Sewanee to 1-1. Next up for the Tigers in Kenyon on March 5th.
Southwestern headed out on their first road trip
this week after opening the season with a home win 24-2 against the
University of Dallas that reset numerous records for the Pirates.
Southwestern faced Christopher Newport on Friday night and fell
11-5. SU then traveled to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon on Sunday.
RMC came out blazing and scored 15 unanswered goals en route to a
18-1 win over the Pirates. Southwestern returns home to face Grand
Canyon on Thursday before heading to Houston for a neutral site
match against Marymount.
