SALEM, Va. - The most successful season in the history of Colorado College men’s lacrosse came to a sudden conclusion on Wednesday night with a 25-5 loss at Roanoke College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Richard Lachlan struck for eight goals as the Maroons improved to 15-3 and advanced to Saturday’s second round to face Gettysburg College.
Lachlan personally staked Roanoke to a 3-0 lead during the
opening 2:48, but James Mauk gave CC a lift when he found the net
twice in a span of nine seconds to cut the deficit to one goal with
11:18 remaining in the opening period.
After eight minutes without a goal, Lachlan ignited a 5-0 run that gave the hosts an 8-2 advantage 1:48 into the second period.
Steve Rijo provided the Tigers’ third goal with 13:07 remaining in the first half, and after the Maroons extended their lead to 10-3, Mauk tallied for the third time a little more than half way through the second period to pull Colorado College to within six.
Following two more Roanoke goals, Jake Smith added a man-up goal off a feed from Charles Curtis, but that proved to be the final score of the night for the Tigers.
The Maroons tacked on two more markers in the second period and outscored Colorado College 11-0 during the final 30 minutes.
Zach Steedman, who faced a total of 63 shots, made a season-high 18 saves while going the distance between the pipes for the Tigers.
RC's Charles Pease stopped eight shots in 45 minutes of action before giving way to Mike Hardon.
Colorado College, which won its second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, finished the campaign with a 15-1 record and set a program record for victories in a single season.
