
SUWANEE, Ga. - The inaugural SCAC men's lacrosse season got underway with games played from Feb. 12-23. Birmingham-Southern, Colorado College, Hendrix, Sewanee and Southwestern will compete for the first ever SCAC men's lacrosse championship. Colorado College picked up two wins over Division II teams to begin the season.

Birmingham-Southern
opened its 2010 season with a stark test, traveling to North
Carolina to take on the #10 Mars Hill College Lions. The Panthers
fell 15-4. Most of MHC’s goals came in the first half. The
Lions took an 11-1 advantage into intermission, but the Panthers
settled down in the second half and played well. They will look to
get a good start at home on Tuesday when they host Washington &
Lee in Panther Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Colorado College exploded for five goals late in
the first period and never looked back as the Tigers opened the
season with a 15-7 victory over Division II Notre Dame de Namur
University on Friday. Moses Taylor had a game-high four goals,
while James Mauk and Hunter Sprole added five points apiece to make
winners out of freshman goalie Jackson Nye and head coach Guy Van
Arsdale in their CC debuts. Mauk scored the game-winning goal with
3:16 remaining in the first half. Kyle Bishop led the defensive
effort with four ground balls and won five of 11 face-offs. Carson
Christman scored four goals and set up two others to lead CC to a
13-5 victory over Dominican University of California on Sunday.
Sprole struck for three scores and added a pair of assists as the
Tigers completed their season-opening visit to California with a
2-0 record against Division II opponents. Jackson Nye, who made
five saves, improved to 2-0 between the pipes for the Tigers.
Hendrix had its 2010 season opener with Carthage
postponed due to heavy rain and lightning at Warrior Field on
Sunday, Feb. 21. The two teams are currently looking at next
Saturday, Feb. 27 as a make up date. After that, the Warriors
return to the field March 5 when they travel to Kenyon College.
Sewanee hosted Wittenberg in Nashville at
Montgomery Bell Academy on Saturday and after leading 5-0 at the
half, Wittenberg got the 16-1 win over Sewanee. Sewanee rallied a
bit after the halftime break with a Brendan Eisenbrandt goal, but
the Ohio Tigers scored 11 more to get the 15-goal win over the
purple Tigers from Tennessee. Stewart Calder faced 50 shots in goal
and earned 17 saves on the day. Matt Lord led Wittenberg's scoring
with three goals. Sewanee was successful in 16 of 23 clear
attempts, while Wittenberg was 19-21 in clear attempts. Wittenberg
won 10 face-offs, compared to eight for Sewanee. Sewanee is 0-1 so
far in 2010 and will host Washington and Lee on Wednesday at Puett
Field. Wittenberg is 1-0.
Southwestern takes the field for the first time
ever as an NCAA D-III program at host Whittier College on Thursday,
February 25, 2010 in Memorial Stadium. They next face D-II upstart
Grand Canyon University on the campus of Whittier University on
Friday, February 26th where head coach Joe Ernst pits his new team
against one of his graduates from Mercyhurst – North East,
Scott Franks of St. Ignatius in Cleveland, Ohio and his new squad.
Saturday is a travel day when the Pirates trek to Dominican
University in San Rafael, CA to play the Penguins on Sunday,
February 28th.
