COLIN CHAPMAN OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a freshman from Franklin, N.C., has been named SCAC Men's Golfer-of-the-Week for tournaments played from Monday, March 23 through Sunday, March 29.
Chapman won the 38th Annual Camp Lejeune
Intercollegiate at Marine Base Camp Lejeune this weekend with
scores of 71-65-72 = 208 at Paradise Point Golf Course.
Chapman shot an opening round one under par 71 on
the PAR 72 Gold and followed it up with a five under 65 on the PAR
70 Scarlet Course on day two but still found himself trailing
Methodist University senior Tom Cooper by a stroke after 36 holes.
Chapman edged Cooper on day three as the
tournament moved back onto the GOLD Championship on Sunday by one
stroke to force a playoff for individual medalist honors.
Both players parred the 414 yard PAR 4 first hole. After Cooper
hit his approach shot on the 418 yard PAR 4 9th hole (second
playoff hole) to 25 feet, Chapman hit a laser 6
iron into a strong wind off the ocean and stopped it at two feet
for a tap in birdie. Cooper made a great effort on his putt for
birdie but it just slid by on the low side and
Chapman rolled in his two footer to win the Camp
Lejeune Intercollegiate. It was the second time a Stormy Petrel had
won the coveted Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Medalist. Joe Green
won in 2007. In 2004 Oglethorpe's Trent Erb lost in a playoff (on
the same two holes).
