SCAC Men's Golf Fall Recap - Week One

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Four of the league's six men's golf teams opened up the fall segment of their 2016-17 season this week.

Three of the four - Schreiner University, Texas Lutheran University and Trinity University - participated in the Texas Lutheran/John Bohmann Memorial Tournament, and defending SCAC champion, Southwestern University, played at the Rhodes College Collegiate.

Schreiner finished in second-place in the two-day, 54-hole event, finishing with a team score of 861 (+9). The Mountaineers were led by freshman Blake Hartford, who carded consecutive rounds of 72 to finish at even par (213) for the tournament and locked down third place and an All-Tournament finish in his first collegiate event. Freshman Joseph Wolcik shot 217 (+4) to finish sixth and junior Jacob Gentry ended up one shot behind Wolcik at 218 (+5) which earned him a tie for 10th.

Texas Lutheran finished in fourth place with a team score of 878 (+26). The Bulldogs also had three individuals in the top 10 - led by freshman Nathan Haley who tied for sixth with a three-round total of 217 (+4). Senior Kraig Zimmerhanzel tied for 10th with a 218 (+5) as did junior Garrett Losack who was participating as a member of the TLU 'B' team.

Trinity University posted a fifth-place finish in the seven-team event with an 883 (+31). The Tigers had four individuals finish in the top 16, led by junior Travis Hindle who shot a final-round 3-over 74, and came into the club house with a 6-over 219. Hindle stood alone in 13th place at the end of the tournament. 

Concordia University (Texas) finished in first place with a blistering three-round team total of 843 (-9). Ryan McGinley, also of Concordia, led all individuals with a record-breaking three-round total of 200 (-13). He shot rounds of 66, 68 and 66 to dominate the field and the course.

Elsewhere, Southwestern men's golf opened the fall season on Monday and Tuesday and finished in 16th place in a challenging, deep field of competitors at the Rhodes College Collegiate. Freshman Cade Osgood, in his first collegiate appearance, led the Pirates and finished tied for 20th with 149 strokes after shaving seven strokes off his opening round (78-71).
