GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern University Director of Athletics Dr. Glada Munt announced Tuesday that Greg Sigler has been named head men’s and women’s golf coach. Sigler joins the Pirates’ staff after spending the last nine seasons at Concordia University Texas, including seven as the head coach.
“We are delighted to bring a coach of Greg Sigler’s caliber into our men’s and women’s golf programs,” Dr. Munt said. “Both of those programs have had some of the greatest success of our athletic program and therefore it was important to bring in a coach that can continue to challenge for a national championship. We are confident that Coach Sigler is one of the top up-and-coming coaching in Division III and look forward to watching him continue to build the national-level programs Dan Ruyle created.”
“I would like to thank Dr. Munt for the opportunity to lead the Southwestern golf programs,” Sigler said. “I am truly honored. I have always respected and admired the golf programs here at Southwestern. I am looking forward to building on the tradition that Coach Ruyle has established with both teams.”
Ruyle, who spent 15 years at the helm of both programs, announced his resignation in May. Sigler will begin his reign on August 1.
While at Concordia Texas, Sigler built the Tornados men’s team into a regional powerhouse and national contender. He led Concordia to its first-ever top-25 national ranking and an NCAA Championships appearance in 2014. During that campaign, the Tornados captured three tournament titles, while setting school records for both low-round and tournament performances.
Sigler also mentored the most decorated men’s golf student-athlete in Concordia history, Jack Cersosimo, who became a two-time All-American. Cersosimo also advanced to the 2015 NCAA Championships as a individual after he captured medalist honors at the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Championships.
The Concordia women’s team also improved immensely under Sigler’s direction. In each of the past three seasons, the Tornados set program records for low-round and tournament scores. During the 2013-14 campaign, he mentored a first-year student-athlete, Shelby Allen, who set the school record with a 71 in the opening round of the Alamo City Classic.
Sigler’s programs have been just as successful in the classroom. Over the past four years, 20 student-athletes were named to the ASC All-Academic Teams, while Cersosimo was named the league’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete three times.
Sigler competed collegiately at McMurry University, where he helped the squad to three conference championships. As a junior, Sigler earned medalist honors at the conference championships. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally on the Prairie Tour, Longhorn Tour, Tight Lies Tour and the Dakotas Tour.
The Midland, Texas, native worked as an assistant golf professional at the Jimmy Ray/Roy Kizer Golf Course and Lakeway Golf Club in Austin, as well as the Tribute Golf Club in The Colony. He also taught at the Austin Junior Golf Academy and Lakeway Golf Academy before joining the Concordia staff.
Sigler earned a BBA from McMurry in 1996.
