Schreiner Extends Lead at NCAA Championship; Southwestern Makes Cut

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Led by junior Cheyne Kendall's second consecutive round of 70 (-2), the Schreiner University men's golf team shot a second round total of 293 (+2) to open a four-stroke lead halfway through the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships.  Kendall's total matches his 36-hole total from one year ago and his second place standing also is identical to last year.

Junior Jimmy Keener shot a one-over-par 73 and is at 143 (-1) through two days, good for sixth place individually.  The Mountaineers, ranked 15th coming into the tournament, also got 75's from junior Zach Oliver and sophomore Phil Stewart.  Both are at 149 and are tied for 51st place. Freshman Matt McClung shot 76 and is at 147 for 29th place.

Schreiner battled nerves early, going +5 on the first hole, but settled down and played even par the rest of the way on Wednesday. Kendall double-bogeyed his first hole but made five birdies before closing with a bogey on his final hole.

Oglethorpe sits in second place after shooting the high schore of the day at 287 (-1), followed by defending national champion Texas-Tyler in third, Transylvania is fourth, and La Verne in fifth.  Methodist, who was just one shot behind the Mountaineers at the beginning of the day, shot 306 and fell to sixth place.

Fellow SCAC member Southwestern also made the 36-hole cut and is tied for 11th place at 595. Junior Jordan Cowart had an up and down day, shooting six birdies, but also scoring five bogies to shoot -1 on the day. Cowart is tied with Kendall at -4 along with UT-Tyler's Bobby Holden. All three are chasing leader Brian Burt of Hampden-Sydney at -8.

Cody Hebert and Cameron Button shot a 74 and 75 respectively to move the Pirates into play on Thursday and Friday.

The third round could face significant weather issues and has already been moved earlier in the day.  A weather system that has plagued the central states, including Texas, is now moving into the Greensboro area and could affect play Thursday and possibly Friday.
