BRANDON ALEXANDER OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior forward from Inez, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Monday, December 17 through Sunday, January 6.
Alexander was outstanding helping to guide Southwestern to its first 4-0 start in SCAC play since the 2004-05 season. In two league victories over the holiday break, Alexander averaged 20 points per game on 48.3 percent shooting, including a season-high 27 points in a win over Centenary. Overall, Alexander averaged 18.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game for the holiday reporting period.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Treylan Matthews of Centenary had a great start to conference play, helping the Gents finish 3-3 in its past six games. Matthews averaged 16.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Freshman forward Devin Martinez of Colorado College recorded the first double-double of his career with 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead the CC Tigers to a victory over Schreiner. Junior forward Logan Fruhwirth of Dallas emerged as the Crusaders leading scorer at the start of SCAC play, averaging 15.8 points per game on 60.1 percent shooting in the last five contests. Senior guard Andrew Romero III of Johnson & Wales continued his torrid pace this year, averaging 28.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game to lead the Wildcats to a 2-2 record in league play over the break. Junior forward Paul Wells of Schreiner led the Mountaineers over a busy six-game holiday stretch, averaging 12.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Senior forward Harris Jowell of Texas Lutheran hit his first double-double of the season, chipping in 10 points and matching a career-high 15 rebounds in a non-conference win over Hardin-Simmons. For the holiday reporting period, Jowell posted 56 total points, averaging 11.2 points per game. Senior forward Danny Rivera of Trinity led the Tigers with 15.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game over the holiday break, which included a 2-2 start in league play for the Tigers.
