LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Seven Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball teams were in action this past week, highlighted by Southwestern winning its first two conference matches of the season. 

Southwestern (2-0 SCAC; 6-3 Overall) opened 2-0 in conference play for the third straight season after a pair of wins over Colorado College (66-65) and Johnson & Wales (90-66). In the team’s win over Colorado College, senior guard Kyle Howard hit a game-winning pull-up jumper with one second remaining to give thePirates a 66-65 victory. The Southwestern starting backcourt of Howard and Luke Hicks combined for 27 points as two of the three Pirates to finish in double figures, along with Kyle Poerschke, who poured in 10 points off the bench. In Sunday’s win at Johnson & Wales, Southwestern had its best offensive performance of the season, shooting 56.9 percent (29-51) from the field, which included 52.6 percent (10-19) from distance, to run away from the Wildcats, 90-66. Both shooting numbers were season-highs for the Pirates as senior Brandon Alexander led a balanced attack with 14 points while pulling down five rebounds. Kyle Poerschke reached double figures for the second-consecutive night off the bench (11 points) and Joel Martinez added 10. 

St. Thomas maintained its undefeated record, improving to 5-0 in non-conference play with a 10-point victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor, 87-77. Sophomore Cameron Gims led the Celts on Thursday, recording a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds and shooting 60 percent (9-15) from the field while adding five steals. Nathan Ghavidel and Nathan Thormaehlen added a combined 24 points, with Kennard Robinson chipping in eight points, six assists and four steals.   

Centenary (3-4 Overall) split games over the week, bouncing back with a win over Louisiana College (76-66) on Saturday after suffering a road-loss to East Texas Baptist (85-69) on Monday. In Saturday’s win Ty Prince led the Gents with 18 points and nine rebounds, the seventh straight game the sophomore forward has reached double figures. Three other players scored in double-figures, including Cedric Harris who had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Prince had a game high 27 points in Monday’s loss to ETBU.   

Austin College is now 3-3 in non-conference play after a 74-66 loss to the University of the Ozarks on Saturday. The ‘Roos were led by Devin Roland with 15 points and four rebounds. Michael Holland added 13 points and nine rebounds with Justice Mercadel adding 14 points. 

In its only game of the week, Texas Lutheran (3-4 Overall) fell to Sul Ross State (80-65). Trystin Silas led the Bulldogs, scoring a career-high 21 points with Jorden Kite adding 18 as the Bulldogs shot 42.9 percent from the field during the first half.
